Teradata Warehouse is the Analytic Hub to Monetize the Internet of Things

Teradata removes hurdles to combined analysis of data from global devices, operations, and historical business data

DALLAS, Oct. 21, 2013 — (PRNewswire) — PARTNERS User Group Conference -- To help customers quickly respond to opportunities created by the evolving Internet of Things, Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the leading analytic data platforms, applications and services company, today revealed that customers will be able to add Java Script Object Notation (JSON) data to their data warehouse. This is a significant advancement, because JSON is the primary language that powers the Internet of Things, a global collection of millions of sensors and embedded microprocessors. Current Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) technology allows for transactional processing of JSON data. However, the OLTP technology doesn't allow for scalable analytics on massive data volumes, which is provided by Teradata's parallel processing analytic engine.

The inclusion of JSON data will establish the Teradata Data Warehouse as the analytic hub from which customers gain business value from the Internet of Things. Customers will be empowered to monetize the Internet of Things by aggregating and analyzing data from diverse machines joined to operational and historical business data. Customers will benefit from Teradata's scalable engine applied to JSON data with JSONPath, a data manipulation feature. In addition, the data will be a part of the Integrated Data Warehouse, which extends the value of operational analytics.

"The Internet of Things will drive the next wave of data growth and it has the potential to change the world, just as the Internet did. Teradata's customers will be the first to take advantage of this new technology and drive advanced analytics," said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. "And, our customers can apply all of Teradata Database's features and functionality to the analysis of JSON data. In addition, they will be able to use the bundled JSON data with JSONPath, without the need to build a separate, isolated platform."

"A third of organizations surveyed by IDC earlier this year reported that they have started incorporating new data sources in their big data and analytics solutions. A growing number are integrating two or more sources of data, such as social networks, sensors, mobile devices, and click streams," said Dan Vesset, program vice president, Business Analytics and Big Data IDC. "As data from the Internet of Things continues to grow, many organizations will have to accelerate their efforts to capture, integrate, and use it. Teradata's strategy that enables organizations to integrate JSON data into a data warehouse is an important step toward enabling customers to ensure they don't miss opportunities to improve or create new analytics based on new data sources."

JSON is the primary data exchange language that allows the Internet of Things to connect and communicate with millions of devices. Teradata enables customers to apply the power and performance of the Teradata Database to the massive amounts of data. The Teradata Database is agile and flexible and can capture, index, analyze, and manage JSON data, as if it were just another data element. A separate platform or application is not required. With the inclusion of JSON data in the data warehouse, all the complexity is removed and business users can apply all their favorite tools and techniques to the data. Teradata stores JSON data and its schema together to minimize the need for ongoing database design (schema) changes.

Some uses of JSON data by the Internet of Things are described below.

  • Municipal landscape sprinklers will send facts to city agencies for analysis leading to the conservation of water usage.
  • Networks in homes and office facilities will constantly analyze and optimize energy use, ultimately sharing information with the utilities company and alerting consumers to failing appliances.
  • Smart factories will evolve from improving quality to new levels of inventory control and supply chain optimization.
  • RFID tags and smart sensors on shelves will enable analysis of sales and inventory in real time as well as how long a shopper lingers at a display.

Technical Innovation Drives Analytics

JSON is a freeform text document - sometimes called an object - that typically has rich information. Because JSON is a highly flexible way to represent data, it is easy for programmers and database administrators to use it. JSON documents can then be loaded into the data warehouse with little additional effort. From there, business intelligence tools allow the business user to run queries directly on JSON data.

Teradata stores the entire JSON object directly into a column in a table so it can be used in multiple ways. The uniqueness of Teradata's innovation makes JSON documents accessible to the business user. Database administrators will use the JSONPath dot.notation to name the columns in the table. The dot.notation is familiar to Java and C programmers and makes it easier for them to work with the SQL language. More important, it allows the Teradata Database to extract the useful values from the JSON object in real time. This makes it easier to use instead of asking programmers to learn yet another language. Other databases must use ETL processes to shred the JSON document into rows and columns, adding complexity and losing valuable data.

In addition, JSON allows users to place multiple documents inside one big document. The big document has all the data on a topic such as location-based advertisements that are pushed to mobile phones based on the geospatial location of the phone owner. The JSON documents can contain a complete history of a consumer's locations, responses to geo-based ads, and activity before and after seeing the ads. From a single JSON document, analysis can increase click through rates, dropped calls, and provide insights for new services.

The JSON data capability will be available with the next release of the Teradata Database during the second quarter of 2014.
