DC Department of Transportation Engages District-wide Stakeholders with Envista

Improves Project Coordination Efficiency, Avoids Costs and Public Disruption, Reduces Environmental Impact

Beverly, Mass. – June 2, 2011 – Envista Corporation, the world’s leading provider of enterprise map-based coordination solutions for right-of-way (ROW) management via the web, and the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced that three major utilities in the DC metropolitan area— Washington Gas, DC Water and Pepco—are participating with  DDOT in an Envista-powered, map-based project coordination ecosystem. All participants have access to real-time construction and maintenance project details via the online Envista map, which automatically identifies conflicts in the ROW and enables direct communication between the organizations to resolve those conflicts.  DDOT anticipates millions of dollars in savings annually due to better coordination and shared paving costs among the District-wide stakeholders.

Terry Bellamy, Acting Director of DDOT, said, “It is our daily focus and long-term mission to enhance the quality of life for District residents and visitors by ensuring that people, goods and information move efficiently and safely through our streets.  With all the major utilities and our own department engaged in hundreds of construction and maintenance projects across the District, it’s essential that we coordinate effectively to minimize any adverse impact on the public and the environment.  Envista provides our respective organizations with insight into each other’s activities, allowing us to work together so streets are only dug up once, paving moratoriums are more easily met, and future opportunities are better planned.”

Brad Steer, Envista’s Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said, “Envista is designed to contribute increasing value as more and more stakeholders in a city or geographic region all participate by sharing project information in the online map-based environment. The District Department of Transportation is demonstrating in the real world how Envista helps inform decisions about where and when ROW activities should take place.  By engaging stakeholders from across the District with a common set of map-based tools and resources, DDOT is leveraging the power of Envista to plan and coordinate better ways to reduce the time and cost associated with completing projects.”

To date, DDOT is coordinating with a District-wide ecosystem that currently includes Washington Gas, DC Water and Pepco, all of which have adopted the Envista map-based solution.  In fact the Envista solution has proven so effective that DDOT created an ordinance in September 2010 requiring all utilities operating in the public right-of-way to use the online map-based service.

By working to engage the remaining utilities in the DC area to participate in the Envista project coordination ecosystem, DDOT anticipates even further gains in efficiency, greater monetary and environmental savings, and improved public satisfaction.
