New HIKE GPS Application Contains More Than 220,000 Miles of Trails, Thousands of Trailheads, Campgrounds, Picnic Areas, and More
SILVER SPRING, Md. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 4, 2010 — American Hiking Society, organizer of National Trails Day ®, today announced the launch of its HIKE GPS maps application for the iPhone, a one-stop app with over 300 free recreational maps - encompassing more than five million square miles of the United States. HIKE embeds premium map content onto the iPhone so there’s no need to “cache” topo maps or search for a network signal in the middle of the backcountry. The application also allows users to track and record their off-road adventures, take geo-coded pictures, and easily upload and share their outdoor experiences via Facebook and email.
“We’re excited to offer map resources to outdoor enthusiasts across the country with the launch of our iPhone application,” stated Gregory Miller, American Hiking Society’s president. “For more than three decades we have been at the forefront of promoting, protecting, and maintaining trails. By embracing today’s technology, we hope this application will expand and enhance the outdoor experience for people from all walks of life and connect them with our natural and cultural heritage, promote healthy lifestyles, and serve to galvanize communities.
“As American Hiking Society works toward ensuring hiking trails and natural places are cherished and preserved for us and future generations, we believe that education and technology can help people get more from the outdoors,” Miller continued. “Additionally, proceeds from each sale of the HIKE GPS app on iTunes will help us continue our work on hiking advocacy, volunteer programs, and outreach to communities.”
The application is compatible with the Apple iPhone 3G and 3G S, and is powered by Intermap Technologies, a global digital mapping company and developer of other acclaimed iPhone applications. HIKE has more than 220,000 miles of trails, thousands of trailheads, campgrounds, and picnic areas – with detailed locations of all major public land boundaries.
“It’s great to partner with an organization like American Hiking Society and support the excellent work they do in promoting and protecting our natural resources,” said Kevin Thomas, Intermap’s vice president of marketing. “Consumers get a real win-win with this application – they receive a terrific app for the iPhone with outstanding maps and functionality, while at the same time they’re supporting a great cause. I have no doubt that users will get more out of their outdoor experience through the use of the HIKE application.”
