Broadcom Announces HD Cable Set-Top Box SoC Solutions With Integrated MoCA(R) for North America

Single-Chip Solutions Integrate Dual 1GHz Tuners, MoCA 1.1, 3D Graphics, DOCSIS(R) 2.0 with Channel Bonding, HD AVC and Advanced Power Management

DENVER, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SCTE Expo Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced new set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions enabling manufacturers and cable service providers to cost effectively offer the latest in interactive HDTV programming, connectivity, whole-home media distribution and advanced 3D user interfaces to the North American market. The new Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA)-integrated BCM7125 and BCM7119 single-chip, multi-format HD DOCSIS(R) 2.0 compatible solutions usher in the next evolution of the connected home with advanced functionality and services such as multi-room HD DVR capabilities and advanced 3D graphics user interfaces.

Highlights/Key Facts:

-- By designing high performance, low power and cost effective
MoCA-integrated solutions, Broadcom meets both consumer and service
provider demand for integrated in-home multimedia distribution services
        such as multi-room HD DVR.
-- With unprecedented levels of integration including MoCA 1.1 support,
Tru2Way Cablecard support, dual integrated 1GHz cable tuners and DOCSIS
2.0 compatible modems, Broadcom's latest cable STB technology
significantly reduces the power and overall system cost while enabling
advanced services (i.e. multi-room HD DVR capabilities, HDTV
        interactivity, 3D user interfaces).
-- The key BCM7125 and BCM7119 features include:

-- Flexible software support for new compelling subscriber applications
that use Native UI, OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP), Adobe(R)
Flash(R) Platform for the Digital Home, Digital Living Network
Alliance (DLNA(R)), and DTCP-IP security. This unique and flexible
software platform enables appealing interactive digital television,
networked DVR functionality and IP video over DOCSIS applications.
-- The BCM7125 cable STB SoC includes the same functionality as the
BCM7119 but adds an integrated MoCA 1.1 interface that enables
service providers to offer innovative whole-home digital media
distribution services over coax, which in turn, enables subscribers
to securely access, store and share a wide array of digital media
content including HDTV programs, video-on-demand (VoD), DVR
recordings, Internet content, video, music, photos and voice over IP
            (VoIP).
-- Both the BCM7125 and BCM7119 cable STB SoC solutions support DLNA
that facilitates the easy sharing of digital content between
            DLNA-enabled devices throughout the home.
-- 3D graphics support enables dynamic user interfaces for flipping,
            rotating and moving images.
-- Broadcom's latest STB technology features integrated dynamic power
management controllers that provide a very efficient power
management system, capable of managing and shutting down unused
system components in real-time. Even in the lowest power modes, the
BCM7119 and BCM7125 can continue to remain aware of network events
both in the home and from multiple service operators (MSO) head
ends, enabling these SoCs to quickly respond to network and user
inputs. Both chips offer support for Energy Star(R).
-- Both the BCM7125 and BCM7119 cable STB SoCs are sampling to set-top box
manufacturers. Pricing is available upon request.

Supporting Quotes:

Joyce Putscher, Principal Analyst, In-Stat

"Over the next few years, service providers will drive the growth of in-home networks enabling additional services such as multi-room DVR. The growth during the multimedia phase of home networks is being driven by the rapid rise in network-enabled devices; by 2013, the average household will have 2.5x as many digital media devices (computing, gaming, stationary digital consumer electronics, portable and mobile wireless devices) in use as in 2008."

Dan Marotta, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Broadband Communications Group, Broadcom

"Broadcom continues to fuel the technical innovation to drive the transition to the connected home with integration and performance levels that will reduce energy consumption and overall product cost. The new cable set-top box solutions will enable manufacturers and service providers to offer their customers advanced HD programming and popular services like multi-room DVR."
