NAVTEQ Introduces Intermediate Maps for Colombia and Peru

Enables development of basic routing and location-based services

BOGOTA, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of digital map, traffic and location data for in-vehicle, portable, wireless and enterprise solutions announced today at the ESRI Latin America User Conference availability of Intermediate Maps for Colombia and Peru. Intermediate Maps represent the best third party data available in a country. Intermediate Map coverage for Colombia includes over 82,000 km of roads and over 48,000 Points of Interest (POIs). The Intermediate Map for Peru includes over 77,000 km of roads and approximately 12,000 POIs.

Intermediate Maps are a separate class of map data provided by NAVTEQ to support customers who are interested in introducing LBS applications in emerging markets. Allowing for basic route calculation, the Intermediate Map offering is an important tool for customers who need a faster time-to-market in key regions of the world.

While Intermediate Maps do not adhere to the same specifications or required verification as the company's flagship NAVTEQ(R) map, customers appreciate the consistently exceptional technical service and support they have come to expect from NAVTEQ, a leading provider of comprehensive digital map data.

"Colombia and Peru are evolving as growing markets for our customers who develop navigation and location-based solution applications," stated Helder Azevedo, general director for Latin America for NAVTEQ. "Providing them with best available maps delivered in NAVTEQ formats presents them with a stepping stone to take advantage of commercial opportunities while developing applications that can later be ported for use in fully navigable NAVTEQ maps when they become available."

NAVTEQ has a strong commitment to the Latin America region providing approximately 1.8 million kilometers of coverage and over 2.5 million POIs through their offerings of fully navigable NAVTEQ maps for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela and Mexico. NAVTEQ maps, an industry benchmark for accuracy and quality, use a standard global data specification as a foundation to build new coverage areas. This build strategy includes the collection and verification of up to 260 attributes making the maps highly suited for turn-by-turn navigation guidance applications. Additional enhanced 3D visual content is also available to enable improvement in orientation and decision making by end-users of navigation systems at key decision points in the navigation experience.
