ANNAPOLIS, Md., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- NAVTEQ, a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, today announced at the National State Geographic Information Council that it has been selected by the Commonwealth of Virginia to provide an enterprise-wide license of NAVTEQ map data and enhanced datasets. The agreement enables state and local government agencies within the Commonwealth of Virginia full access to NAVTEQ map data.
The Commonwealth of Virginia will receive NAVTEQ premium map data which includes turn restrictions, direction of travel, controlled access and speed limit attributes. City, county and state agencies are provided access to NAVTEQ's enhanced datasets such as NAVTEQ Zip Codes (5-digit and point-only zip codes), NAVTEQ Zip+4 Centroids, NAVTEQ Census Data and NAVTEQ Transport(TM). Providing access to this data will facilitate more consistent data usage resulting in more uniform planning for emergency and disaster response services.
"This agreement with NAVTEQ is win-win situation for us," said Lem Stewart, Commonwealth chief information officer. Stewart leads the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) which oversees the Virginia Geographic Information Network. "It allows us to operate more efficiently and effectively by broadening the use of high-quality statewide road centerline data that we maintain. At the same time, we are able to respond to the citizens' request that online mapping applications and GPS units utilizing commercial datasets be synchronized with data produced by state and local governments."
Additionally, NAVTEQ will utilize statewide map data provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia. This data will be incorporated into NAVTEQ's base map to both expand and maintain the coverage and accuracy of the map database for the state.
"NAVTEQ looks forward to providing the Commonwealth of Virginia the map data resources that they need to secure the wellbeing of the state," commented Roy Kolstad, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Americas, NAVTEQ. "NAVTEQ has a longstanding commitment to working with state and local governments through data exchange programs. Now, with this agreement NAVTEQ and the Commonwealth of Virginia can-- together--bring fresher data to statewide communities."
