Samsung Implements Silicon Image InstaPort(TM) Technology in Next Generation DTVs

SUNNYVALE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—October 1, 2008— Silicon Image, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIMG), a leader in semiconductors and intellectual property for the secure storage, distribution and presentation of high-definition content, today announced that its InstaPort port switching technology, introduced on June 30, 2008, will be featured in Samsungs next generation DTVs and is currently under evaluation at nine of the top ten DTV manufacturers for next years models. Silicon Images InstaPort technology adds intelligence to HDMI technology-enabled digital television (DTV) inputs, resulting in sub-second switching time between inputs delivering digital content from different sources connected to the DTV.

Samsung agrees that port switching time is an issue with todays sophisticated consumers who have multiple HDMI technology-enabled devices connected to their DTV at any given time, said Lew Paceley, DTV marketing director at Silicon Image, Inc. As the industry leader in delivering state of the art digital television products, Samsung endorses InstaPort technology for the improvement it provides to consumers in their HDTV entertainment experience.

With an ever increasing number of mobile and broadband entertainment devices connected to the DTV, consumers are faced with frustratingly long delays of up to seven seconds in some cases when switching from one device to another. Silicon Images InstaPort technology reduces the port switching time to less than one second, giving consumers instant access to enjoy their digital entertainment.

Paceley continues, As the number of HDMI inputs on DTVs increase to four or more, there is an imminent need for fast, sub-second switching time between source devices. With its instant connection ability, InstaPort technology-enabled DTVs will significantly enhance the consumer viewing experience of high-definition content from multiple sources such as digital video disc (DVD) players, digital video recorders (DVRs), Blu-ray Disc players, game consoles and set-top boxes (STBs).

InstaPort technology is being incorporated into three new Silicon Image semiconductor products, the SiI9287 port processor and the SiI9251/SiI9261 input processors. The SiI9285 and SiI9287 devices also feature Silicon Images MHL technology, a low-pin count serial link technology that enables mobile devices such as cameras, mobile phones and portable media devices to connect and display standard and high-definition content to DTVs.
