clauter_spar3d.pngGreetings,

By now I expect most of you have heard that we have new dates for SPAR 3D and AEC (July 27-29), and that we'll be co-locating with the International Lidar Mapping Forum and Geo Week. Executive Editor Jeremiah shared his thoughts on this in a short piece on SPAR this week, but the summary is we are thrilled to be back planning a wonderful and interesting event for you all.

This week we start to question everything, a little bit, even the pursuit of accuracy. We've got Tony Sabat with a piece that asks a lot of very thoughtful questions for the future, including "Is accuracy still important?" and we have a guest interview with Gabe Paez of the Wild that might make you re-think your definition of effective collaboration.

Is mm-Level Accuracy Not Important Anymore?

By Tony Sabat

In the past few years the reality capture industry has seen an explosion of new solutions entering the market. Many of these solutions are not following the typical aspirations we have seen traditionally from new products entering the market. Until recently, many of the new products entering the market were chasing one of two goals, accuracy and/or range. A few years back accuracy and the gold standard of millimeter or even sub-millimeter accuracy were the goals for new product development if not aiming to achieve this accuracy at increased ranges or others purely aiming at increased range.

What's the Future of Collaboration?

By Carla Lauter

It is without question that the global threat of Coronavirus has prompted a plethora of changes to the way that we work. In these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to have one’s “digital ducks in a row’ to be able to continue working when teams are distributed, social distancing and travel restrictions are implemented, and there is work that cannot simply be paused. We caught up with Gabe Paez, CEO of The Wild, to discuss how thtis new crisis provides an opportunity to redefine remote work and collaboration.

Navigating the Digital Disconnect: A Test for AEC

by Carla Lauter

At the VRARA conference in Vancouver in 2019, ETRO Construction’s Aubrey Tucker gave a talk about the challenges of navigating the landscape of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platforms available for AEC in design and construction. In the current climate where professionals at AEC may have limited jobsite access, this situation becomes even harder to navigate. Tucker offers ideas and explores some of the lessons that AEC companies need to learn to get through this crisis.

Location data and technology provider HERE has released HERE Geodata Models, a hyper-precise, global, indexed 3D dataset explicitly designed to accelerate the deployment of 5G technologies. Unlike the lower-resolution satellite-based imagery used for 4G planning, HERE Geodata Models provides sub-meter geospatial and geometric precision.

Free Trials of Virtual Workstations Extended to Support Home Workers

To help support 3D CAD users working from home over the coming weeks and months, several workstation and cloud providers are offering free licenses and trials of services and software. All of the technologies are slightly different but work on the same principle that a host workstation (in the office, datacentre or cloud) does the heavy-duty processing while pixels are streamed to the home worker’s PC, laptop or entry-level workstation.

CONFERENCE UPDATE

SPAR 3D Expo & Conference, AEC Next Technology Expo & Conference Rescheduled to Take Place with Geo Week

By Jeremiah Karpowicz

The number of times I’ve used the word “unprecedented’ over the past few weeks has been…well, unprecedented. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything and the complications from it are still unfolding while simultaneously being felt across the world and in every industry. The situation continues to rapidly change and evolve to the point that it became obvious everything wouldn’t be settled by the time the AEC Next and SPAR 3D Expo and Conference were set to take place in June. That compelled the announcement today that the events have not only been rescheduled for the end of July, but that they’ll be co-located with Geo Week.
