Michigan DOT Enhancing Roadway Maintenance Through Continuing Surveys by Fugro

Toronto, Canada, January 4, 2017 - After successfully completing a 4-year road survey project for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Fugro has been awarded a 2-year contract extension. Because the ability to evaluate road imperfections and determine the best opportunities for future pavement improvement is of significant value to MDOT, Fugro will continue to collect and process pavement data and digital images of its road assets. Accurate and consistent road information has led to greater efficiency and MDOT is better equipped to meet the road maintenance needs of the seven regional departments in the state and to better serve the citizens of Michigan.

Fugro’s Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN) system will continue to collect critical pavement condition and asset data. The iVision web-based application will provide MDOT a convenient view of collected images and data, allowing for fast visual assessment of assets and pavement condition. To ensure a smooth transition to the latest version of iVision, Fugro will provide an all-inclusive technical training session for MDOT staff.

Data and imagery for the project is collected in one continuous pass at posted highway speeds and does not interfere with traffic flow. As a result of this comprehensive automated approach, MDOT can summarize the collected information graphically and use dashboards to analyze trends year over year, assisting with the prioritization of maintenance and rehabilitation of their road network. David Lowe, Fugro Roadware Managing Director, stated, “This is a great opportunity to continue to support infrastructure improvements in the state of Michigan using Fugro’s ARAN technology. The first four years of the project were very productive and we are looking forward to continuing our partnership with MDOT.”

Fugro has provided pavement condition surveys for numerous DOTs in the USA including the states of Texas, Louisiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia, as well as the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2). Additionally, the company has delivered vehicle-based automated data collection systems to the states of Arkansas, Connecticut, Maryland, Missouri, and South Dakota.
