GLOBALFOUNDRIES Collaborates with Anbaric Microgrid and Exelon to Explore Energy Solutions for Enhanced Power Quality and Reliability

Assessment part of public-private initiative to support continued economic growth of high tech R&D and manufacturing in New York’s Capital Region

WAKEFIELD, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — November 18, 2016 — GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Anbaric Microgrid, and Exelon today announced an agreement to identify opportunities for improving power quality and reliability at the company’s Fab 8 semiconductor manufacturing facility in Saratoga County, N.Y. through a series of power quality studies. Uninterrupted, high-quality power is essential for operating the plant’s sensitive manufacturing equipment and for continued growth of the high-tech advanced manufacturing economy in New York’s Capital Region. The initiative will leverage distributed energy resources and microgrid controls to both address the operational requirements of Fab 8 and to model solutions that can be applied elsewhere.

The companies will perform a power quality analysis to identify the source and costs associated with electrical disturbances. They will further determine the efficiency of GLOBALFOUNDRIES' energy supply and consumption with proposed improvements including infrastructure investment and utility negotiations. Capacity expansion requirements will be determined by evaluating grid deliverability and load growth and a full evaluation of the energy costs at the Fab 8 site.

“Power reliability, quality and long term capacity to support regional growth are challenges difficult to adequately address within the current utility model,” said Mike Russo, GLOBALFOUNDRIES Director of U.S. Government Relations, Regulatory Affairs and Strategic Initiatives. “This project will not only help GLOBALFOUNDRIES more efficiently and cost-effectively address power issues, but will anchor a much broader initiative intended to rethink the entire system from generation to the customer’s end use.”

“Exelon believes that by embracing and leveraging technology, our industry can effectively improve reliability, transition to clean energy, and lay the groundwork for a truly modern, integrated grid,” said Jeff Yuknis, vice president of Exelon and the leader of Exelon’s New York microgrids business. “We’re pleased to team with GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Anbaric Microgrid on a next-generation energy grid model that will provide greater benefits to customers.”

“This effort will help to shape the future of the grid,” said Dirk van Ouwerkerk, lead partner for Anbaric Microgrid. “Companies like GLOBALFOUNDRIES require a high level of service and customized power products. We’re excited about this partnership to design and develop solutions that address those needs.”

The agreement is part of a broader initiative to address the region’s need for reliable load growth. GLOBALFOUNDRIES has created an ambitious energy program called the “Power Demonstration Model Initiative” (PDMI). Comprising key stakeholders from the private and public sectors, including the utility National Grid, the PDMI will take an integrated approach that will consider site requirements, regional assets and capabilities, and the government’s focus and regulatory requirements to create a comprehensive report of the Capital Region’s needs and assets. The PDMI will further determine and propose solutions that meet the reliability, quality and capacity requirements of high-tech manufacturers in the most cost-effective manner.

The PDMI will also work in conjunction with National Grid to identify opportunities for modernizing the energy grid in the Capital Region. Through PDMI, the group will collaborate on the planning, testing, and development of energy technologies that support a sustainable and scalable grid model.

“National Grid fully supports the development of newer innovative energy solutions that will allow high tech leaders like GLOBALFOUNDRIES and others to continue their growth and success in New York State,” said Laurie Poltynski, National Grid Executive Manager, Eastern NY.
