Twelve best-in-breed startups chosen to expedite breakthroughs in materials technology
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 23, 2016 — (PRNewswire) — Plug and Play announces its second batch of breakthrough materials and packaging startups aiming to disrupt a trillion-dollar industry. By uniting major industry players from resin suppliers, transformers, retailers and CPGs, Plug and Play is accelerating the implementation of innovation across the entire value chain. For a complete list of our New Materials & Packaging Partners, visit http://plugandplaytechcenter.com/corporations/new-materials-packaging/.Susan MacKay, CEO of Cerahelix, explains that "our home base is in Maine, and we're looking to take advantage of this opportunity to expand our network and gain introductions to new partners and investors in the space."
The New Materials and Packaging innovation platform holds a 12-week accelerator program twice per year for 10-20 startups hand-picked from over 500 applications. The 3% of startups accepted into the program are then introduced to Plug and Play's network of over 100 corporate partners, 250 Venture capitalists and hundreds of thought leaders and industry experts for business development, funding and strategic partnerships. Companies entering the accelerator batch were chosen around the following focus areas: improved materials attributes (barrier properties, stiffness, melt strength, flexibility), smart packaging, sustainability, e-commerce packaging solutions, user experience, and renewability.
Startups in the batch include:
Startup Name |
Description |
AnCatt |
We developed the world's first high performance anti- corrosion paint without using traditional toxic heavy-metal anti- corrosion pigments such as chromate, lead, and zinc. The surprisingly record-setting 13,000 independent corrosion test result also indicated a dramatically extended, over six fold, durability comparing to the current best performance of 2,000 hours. This next generation anti-corrosion coating platform is thin, light-weight, surface tolerant, and self-sealing that could be used to protect all kinds of metals. |
Aromyx |
Aromyx has built a solution for the digital capture of scent and taste – the EssenceChip™ – that puts the human olfactory and taste receptors onto a disposable biochip, with a digital readout. The Aromyx platform will be invaluable to large corporations in the food & beverage, consumer packaged goods, chemicals and agriculture industries, as it will enable digital manipulation of taste and scent, akin to how we work with images and sounds today. |
BioCellection |
Plastic pollution is a global crisis that threatens the lives of millions of wildlife and the food safety for 4 billion people. BioCellection uses science to tackle plastic pollution one plastic at a time. We are starting with polystyrene because it has very low recyclability and makes up one third of marine pollution. Using our proprietary chemical and biological methods, we turn polystyrene waste into valuable biosynthesized compounds. Our two revenue streams include bioremediation service for plastic waste producers, and products, such as biosurfactants, for the textiles industry. |
BioInspira |
BioInspira is a sensor platform startup advancing air chemicals and pathogens detection for growing industrial and healthcare needs. Our first product is a virus-based natural gas sensor that is 1000x more sensitive, 100x smaller and 100x lower in cost than current sensors. With our sensor-enabling detection grid, we implement 24/7 remote monitoring system to help mid/up-stream of natural gas industry recoup the annual $4.6B value of lost gas leaking from their infrastructure. |
Cerahelix |
Cerahelix combines DNA biotechnology and ceramic materials to conserve water and energy resources used in processing and manufacturing. Our patented picofiltration technology provides an efficient water recycling solution for challenging industrial process conditions. Cost savings include less down time and decreased energy consumption. Our durable PicoHelix filter has broad applications across multiple industries that are looking for energy savings and zero liquid discharge solutions. |
Cosine Additive |
Cosine Additive is spearheading the development of true agile manufacturing for high value industrial and commercial parts. Combining both traditional machining and additive manufacturing experience, the Cosine team has developed a unique, versatile, high performance, high value added polymer 3D printer. Using the knowledge and experience gained, the company is making significant advancements in all major segments of the 3D printing ecosystem -- hardware, materials and software. |
EVRYTHNG |
EVRYTHNG is an Internet of Things Smart Products Platform that provides digital identity and data management for products and packaging on the web. Companies use EVRYTHNG's Platform-as-a-Service to manage billions of intelligent online identities in the cloud for their products, connected directly or via smart packaging and smartphones. The value of physical assets is transformed by adding an intelligent, personalized layer of digital content, services and data analytics. This makes every product into a digital product for smarter operations, using real-time tracking intelligence and supply chain applications, and connects products more cleverly to people's lives. |
GraphWear Technologies |
GraphWear is replacing blood and urine diagnostic tests with a non-invasive sweat test. Sweat is diluted and ultra-filtered blood and has the same bio information as blood, only in minuscule concentrations. GraphWear has developed a flexible sensor that can tap into this information for real-time healthcare monitoring using nanotechnology. We are pursuing three market opportunities in the following order: professional athletic monitoring, consumer wearables, and patient monitoring. |
LIMEX |
LIMEX is an amazing future material, made from Limestone. We can save water by LIMEX. Limestone reserve is abundant. Limestone is a natural resource and high recycling capability. LIMEX can save huge water and trees because we don't need no water and trees for producing. LIMEX instead of the standard paper. LIMEX also has more capability to make plastic made packages. |
Neurensic |
Business processes in every industry are shaped by regulatory demands. But compliance teams struggle with processing the vast data of these industries, as regulations and criminal threats become more sophisticated. Neurensic enables a new global standard for understanding regulatory compliance risk, providing insights impossible for humans to find alone. |
SLIPS Technologies |
SLIPS Technologies, Inc. (STI) is a venture-funded startup launched out of Harvard University and based in Cambridge, MA. STI makes SLIPS™, the world's first and only fully-slippery coatings and materials that are unique because they present a 100% liquid interface to the outside world. Our surfaces have a stable and immobilized liquid lubricant film overlayer. This "liquid surface" is cost-effective, robust and self-healing, and it makes SLIPS™ highly repellent to virtually all liquids and biological fouling agents. SLIPS™ solves sticky surface problems in industrial, medical and consumer applications – for example, barnacles sticking to marine vessels, bacteria sticking to medical devices, ice sticking to heat exchangers, and viscous fluids sticking inside containers. SLIPS™ surfaces can also be used to purposely deliver lubricity in applications where a slippery surface enhances product performance, for example catheters and shaving cartridges. |
Smart Planet Technologies |
Smart Planet Technologies is a materials engineering and intellectual property company with innovations in packaging technology. Paperboards with food contact such as freezer packaging, paper cups, takeout trays are traditionally coated with 100% polyethylene, which makes the materials very difficult to recycle, typically winding up in landfill (estimated 1.2 million tons in the US). Smart Planet's EarthCoating is a drop-in replacement to 100% polyethylene coating, and is engineered for recyclability. |
