(Chicago, Ill. – June 10, 2015) –Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, will serve as the principal engineering consultant for the Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) this fall, providing pro bono work for key installations. The first of its kind in North America, CAB will showcase new and commissioned projects by more than 60 firms from 30 countries, inviting participants to demonstrate groundbreaking advances in architectural design and its effect on the world. CAB will offer attendees free admission to a variety of seminars, screenings, tours and educational components.
Titled “The State of the Art of Architecture,” the 2015 exhibition will run from Oct. 3, 2015 to Jan. 3, 2016 at five venues across Chicago.
Key Points
- Thornton Tomasetti will conduct feasibility studies on the Chicago Cultural Center, a 120-year-old landmarked Beaux Arts structure at 78 E. Washington St., which will serve as CAB’s main hub. Several other venues, such as Millennium Park and the historic Water Tower, will also house CAB programs.
- The firm will provide feasibility studies and structural expertise for the construction of major installations – including both micro-architecture and large sculptural pieces – planned for various indoor/outdoor spaces around the Cultural Center, such as its atrium and Yates Gallery.
- Thornton Tomasetti will assess the construction of the commissioned commercial kiosks, securing floor supports and suspended exhibits. These installations will reside at Millennium Park for the event’s duration, after which they will be permanently placed along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
- The firm has collaborated on several iconic projects around Chicago, including TILT at 360 Chicago atop the John Hancock Center, the adaptive reuse of Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears, the residential conversion of the historic Metropolitan Tower, and a number of projects at the University of Chicago.
