Fourth Installment of Global Blockbuster Hunger Games Franchise Will Roll Out on World’s Largest 3D Cinema Platform Beginning November 20
LOS ANGELES — (BUSINESS WIRE) — February 6, 2015 — RealD Inc. (NYSE: RLD) and Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a premier next generation global content leader, announced today that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, the fourth installment of the global blockbuster Hunger Games franchise, will be released worldwide in RealD 3D beginning November 20, 2015. This will be the first film in The Hunger Games franchise to receive a global RealD 3D release.
“With more than $2.2 billion in global box office, The Hunger Games franchise has become a global phenomenon with anticipation at a boiling point for the next film, Mockingjay – Part 2. We believe there will be no better way to experience the conclusion of The Hunger Games series than in RealD 3D,” said Michael V. Lewis, CEO of RealD. “Having partnered with Lionsgate to bring The Divergent Series: Insurgent to theatres in RealD 3D next month, we are pleased to continue our work with content creators to leverage RealD’s world’s largest 3D cinema platform to the benefit of filmmakers, studios, exhibitors and moviegoers worldwide.”
“We’re pleased to extend our partnership with our friends at RealD and bring Mockingjay – Part 2 to their thousands of 3D screens around the world,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Rob Friedman. “We believe that the Mockingjay storyline is going to conclude with a blockbuster finale at the global box office, and RealD’s 3D screens are an ideal platform to celebrate this event with a memorable and immersive experience for moviegoers.”
The blockbuster Hunger Games franchise has taken audiences by storm around the world, grossing more than $2.2 billion at the global box office, and it was the #1 movie of the year two years in a row domestically. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 now brings the franchise to its powerful fourth chapter in which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) now fully realizes the stakes are no longer just for survival — they are for the future.
With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends — including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) — Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.
The world’s most widely used 3D cinema technology, RealD 3D is installed in more than 26,000 auditoriums by approximately 1,000 exhibitors in 73 countries around the world.
