AIA Gold Medal Winning Architect Peter Bohlin Elected to the National Academy

Bohlin Cywinski Jackson receives 600th Award for Design

NEW YORK, Nov. 14, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —  Peter Bohlin, a founder of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, architects of the widely acclaimed Apple Fifth Avenue store, was one of 12 individuals elected by peers to the National Academy at an induction ceremony held in New York City on October 28.

Recognized for elegant and humane design ranging from houses of all scales to large academic, civic, cultural, commercial, and corporate buildings, their projects include: civic centers for Seattle and Newport Beach; work with Steve Jobs on Pixar Animation Studios and Apple retail stores worldwide; Colorado School of Mines Marquez Hall; the recently dedicated Sawyer Library for Williams College; and the headquarters for Square, Inc.

When hearing of this news, Square CEO Jack Dorsey said, "Architects should make spaces where people can be themselves—to gather, to trade stories, and to create. Peter and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson have been responsible for some of the best manifestations of that in the world, and we've been fortunate to feel it every day at Square."

According to Bruce Fowle, National Academy President, "Peter Bohlin's exceptional range of work speaks to the very core of what the National Academy has always represented: collecting and sharing work by the preeminent artists and architects working in this country today."

In response to being elected to the Academy, Bohlin said, "We spend most of our daily lives in buildings, and we believe in making architecture that helps connect people to a sense of place, to their work, and to each other. I am delighted to be recognized with this high honor."

As recipients of the 1994 AIA Architecture Firm Award, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson will celebrate 50 years of practice in 2015.

The firm received their 600th design award this week as they are honored with the AIA Pennsylvania Architecture Firm Award.

In 2010, Bohlin was recognized with the AIA Gold Medal, the highest honor bestowed on an individual by the Institute. The firm has offices in Wilkes-Barre, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle, and San Francisco.
