Linking the DPI-7 Scanner to CADWorx fieldPipe

March 17, 2014 -- Increasingly, firms are challenged to leverage the benefits of laser scanning for as-built and quality control with modeling tools built on AutoCAD.  However, the savings in time and accuracy with collecting point clouds of existing and pre-fab infrastructure is often lost by the time design applications can process the data usefully.  Nevertheless, the demand is growing and devices built for reality capture (eg Google’s Project Tango) are creating an entry point for engineers, and designers to start scanning their own projects.

Dot Product 3D recognized this need two years ago, and with the prevalence of mobile devices, released the DPI-7 hand held scanner last April at the SPAR conference in Colorado Springs, CO.  The introduction of the hand held scanner also made the radar of Intergraph’s fastest growing partner and reseller for CADWorx: Plant Design Solutions.

The technical team at Plant Design Solutions knew the hand held scanner would help EPC’s and owners leverage the use of CADWorx fieldPipe for maintenance & small cap projects.  Often piping engineers and designers are tasked to collect onsite measurements in environments requiring a high degree of safety.  The DPI-7 provides the operator real time feedback, and will append to larger facility scans for clarification of areas not easily seen from a traditional tripod based high definition laser scanner (HDS).

Keep in mind, the DPI-7 hand held scanner by no means replaces the benefit of HDS.  However, with the low cost, ease of use, and 3mm of accuracy, the DPI-7 facilitates the use of point clouds on lower budget projects.

Hence the connection with CADWorx fieldPipe affords a process that will save days in collecting as-built, and spool run measurements to create spec driven models of pipe runs with connections in CADWorx Plant Professional.

More about DotProduct3D:

DotProduct3D is headquartered in Houston, TX and the developers of the DPI-7 hand held scanner, an android based application working with proprietary Phi.3D software.  It lets you create 3D-point clouds of just about anything by simply recording it with the device, very much like operating a hand-held video camera.  It is also a real time indoor positioning system as the device position is computed 30 times a second with superior precision. It even can recognize places that you visited before when appending existing scans.  For more details please visit www.dotproduct3d.com.
