Plastic Electronics 2013: Deep Insight into an Industry on the Edge of Commercialization

DRESDEN, Germany — 19 September 2013 — The Plastic Electronics 2013 Exhibition and Conference (PE2013), co-located with the SEMICON Europa ( www.semiconeuropa.org) industry exhibition and conference, illuminates the entire industry of organic electronics. This year's event is significant because, for the first time, manufacturability of Plastic Electronics has taken the centre stage. Beyond this aspect, the PE2013 conference covers all segments of the Printed Electronics industry currently driving development in this influential technology.

Organic (or Plastic) Electronics' imminent transition from the R&D phase to the industrialization stage is highlighted by several keynote presentations at PE2013 ( www.plastic-electronics.org). Indro Mukerjee, CEO of Plastic Logic Ltd., dedicates his speech to this very topic, "Transforming a Science Project into Industrial Reality,” and Dietrich Bertram of Philips Lighting details the prospects of OLED lighting in his presentation entitled, "Making OLED Lighting Real."

Besides the keynote presentations, the conference has plenty to offer for engineers, material experts, manufacturing professionals and industry strategists. In addition to the exhibition — one of the largest in Europe — the conference portion of the event is divided into five tracks: OLEDs for Display and Lighting, Flexible Photovoltaics, Integrated Smart Systems, MicroDisplays, and the PE2013 Plenary Session.

The Plenary session explores the subject matter deeply with presentations from companies such as BASF, STMicroelectronics, or Plastic Logic, as well as academic institutions, including Cambridge University and VTT from Finland. The spectrum of the presentations ranges from a discussion of the overall prospects (Richard Friend, Cambridge University) to very specific technology issues such as “Heterogeneous Integration Technologies as Tools for Smart Integrated Systems in Healthcare,” which will be presented by Salvatore Coffa from STMicroelectronics, a company with a high profile in application-specific semiconductor products.

In the OLED track, the presentations are equally compelling. They cover a range of topics from Processes and Circuits for Active Matrix OLED Display Backplanes” (Norbert Fruehauf, Stuttgart University) to “New Functionalities in Lightweight Structures” (Christian May, Fraunhofer COMEDD) and Mass Production Readiness of Printed and Flexible Electronics (Eric Mounier, Yole). Further topics describe inspection concepts in roll-to-roll production, inkjet printing and photonic sintering, or materials for Organic Electronics, to name just a few.

Alternative methods for electric energy generation, including flexible photovoltaics, are also in the public interest currently. In this track, the discussion revolves around materials and efficiency. Examples include the Stephane Poughon’s (DisaSolar) presentation on flexible solar cells, the Thomas Kolbusch (Coatema GmbH) overview of large-area flexible electronics, and Anders Hagfeld’s (University of Uppsala, Sweden) introduction to recent research results in nanostructured solar cells.

At PE2013, visitors get insights on the state of the industry in implementing systems like Integrated Smart Systems, the “holy grail” of Plastic Electronics technologists around the globe. Here attendees will learn about seemingly futuristic applications and technologies like “Minimal-Invasive Cardiac Sensing and Actuation” (Lauren Klinker, MC10 Inc.), “Interfacing Polymer: Fullerene Organic PV through Optical Sensing” (Stergios Logothetidis, University of Thessaloniki), “Printed Active-Matrix Force Sensors” (Barbare Stadlofer, Joanneum Forschungsgesellschaft), or “High-Resolution Displays on Low-cost Transparent Substrates” (Ashutosh Tripati, Holst Centre).

The Microdisplay session convenes experts and industry practitioners around one of the most popular applications for plastic electronics, Microdisplays. Besides offering a general introduction to the technology behind “Google glass” and the like, the session provides the latest information on Miniaturized Laser Projection Systems” (Michael Scholles, Fraunhofer IPMS), “OLED-on-Silicon Systems” (Uwe Vogel, Fraunhofer COMEDD), and the “Benefits of Ferroelectric LCOS Microdisplays,” (Henning Molsen, Forth Dimension Displays).

With all these presentations, meetings and the general exposition, the event provides a full load of relevant information for anybody who is active in the Plastic Electronics business.
