Small cell and microwave backhaul will play an important role in the rise of 4G LTE networks, which according to recent GSA reports account for 200 commercial networks in 76 countries. GSA also estimates mobile broadband LTE subscriptions to reach 920 million globally by 2017, with other analysts projecting that number at.1.36 billion by the end of 2018. These Ethernet-based LTE/LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) networks must migrate from GPS-based timing solutions to timing-over-packet protocols such as IEEE 1588v2, which requires nanosecond-accurate timing across backhaul links. With the ITU-T standards developments specifying timing error equipment classes, this aspect becomes even more critical to operators, network architects and OEMs. The seminar will build upon discussions at the Layer 123 Conference about best practices for delivering network synchronization in evolving wireless networks and understanding implementation tradeoffs.
