ON Semiconductor Announces Significant Expansion of its Automotive Qualified Product Portfolio

AEC-Q100 and AEC-Q101 qualified discrete and standard ICs provide robust component choices for automotive designers addressing applications for growing vehicle electronic content

PHOENIX — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 6, 2013 — ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), driving innovation in energy efficiency, has significantly expanded its portfolio of AEC-Q100 and AEC-Q101 qualified standard components designed for demanding automotive applications.

Continual growth in vehicle electronic content is causing increased demand from designers for AEC-Q qualified components that deliver robust physical and electrical performance to meet the challenging operation environments found in passenger vehicle systems.

According to information and analytics firm IHS, the semiconductor content for premium cars averages about $336 per vehicle; this includes integrated circuits (ICs) and discretes for the advanced driver assistance system, powertrain, body and infotainment system. The IC content of infotainment systems alone is approximately $52 per vehicle for OEM systems and $81 per vehicle, including after-market systems.

“The semiconductor content in the average vehicle has been rising sharply in recent years and is expected to continue to increase as overall electronics content increases,” said Luca De Ambroggi, senior automotive electronics analyst at IHS. “The number of standard integrated circuits in a premium vehicle ranges between 5,000 and 6,000. The quality of semiconductor components for automotive applications is a key requirement, with the industry targeting a defect rate of zero part per million.”

The Newest Products

The first of the new introductions are ON Semiconductor’s 100 percent ‘avalanche’ energy tested NVMFS single and NVMFD dual families of N-Channel, logic level, power MOSFETs. These devices deliver a combination of low on resistance and high current capability, while minimizing conduction losses and ensuring robust load performance in demanding automotive powertrain, safety and body control module applications, including direct fuel injection, air bag, HVAC and hybrid electronic systems. The small footprint, low height SO-8FL packaged devices provide more than 50 percent board space savings compared to traditionally used DPAK packages with the similar power handling efficiency.

Designed to protect FlexRayTM transceivers from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other harmful transient voltage events, the new NUP2115LT1G transceiver ESD protection diode provides bidirectional protection for each data line and is designed to deliver the highest possible signal integrity. Packaged in a compact SOT-23 package, the NUP2115LT1G gives the system designer a way of improving system reliability and exceeds stringent electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements. As a result of the high-speed nature of in-vehicle networking, the FlexRayTM standard requires low capacitance protection of up to 20 pico farads (pF) and data line capacitance deviation of +/- 2 percent; the NUP2115LT1G far exceeds the FlexRayTM standard with an industry leading stray capacitance of 10 pF maximum with capacitance matching at 0.26 percent.

The company’s automotive qualified NSV1C family of SOT-23 and SOT-223 packaged 100 volt (V), 2 amp (A) PNP and NPN ultra-low saturation voltage (VCEsat), high current sourcing bipolar transistors are highly energy efficient helping to minimize demand on the vehicle battery. Typical applications include instrument cluster modules and Engine Control Units (ECUs) for direct fuel injection. A family of NSV1V devices complement the company’s large range of digital transistors qualified for automotive use and are comprise of 50 volt (V) 100 milliamp (mA) rated devices with resistance values ranging from 1 kilo ohm (kΩ) to 100 kΩ. These are offered in seven package styles and include single, dual, NPN, PNP and complementary devices.

The introduction of the NCV857x and NCV87xx series of high performance, post regulation Low Drop Out (LDO) voltage regulator series, offers improved performance and extended temperature ranges from –40 degrees to +125 degrees Celsius (°C). These LDOs are used in infotainment, safety, lighting and small motor electronic control units where low noise and power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) are essential for improved system performance. The new devices are ideal for Bluetooth applications where low noise performance is critical.

Finally, ON Semiconductor has introduced several families of automotive grade Level 1 serial EEPROMs with an extended temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C. The CAV24Cxx I2C Bus and the CAV25Cxx SPI Bus interface serial EEPROM families are offered in 1 Kilobyte (Kb) to 1 Megabyte (Mb) densities. The products are produced by ON Semiconductor in silicon processes down to 0.18 µm and are offered in industry standard SOIC & TSSOP automotive grade packages. The CAV93C86 (16 Kb) is the first device to be introduced from the Microwire Bus interface serial EEPROM family of devices.
