Albéa Chooses SolidWorks Software for Eco-design

SolidWorks Sustainability integrates analyses at the beginning of the product development process

WALTHAM, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 28, 2012Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp., the world leader in 3D solutions, recently announced that Albéa chose SolidWorks® Sustainability software to incorporate eco-design as a core part of its new product development. With experience in Life Cycle Assessment, Albéa wanted to invest in new tools to allow it to better respond to the sustainable product development needs of the packaging industry while preserving its competitive and technical leadership.

A major player in the packaging industry, with a wide range of products for the cosmetic, perfume, health and dental care markets, Albéa adopted Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools in 2003.

"These tools are essential for a large number of our employees, whether they are draftsmen, designers, salespeople or marketing professionals," stated Jean-Claude Jammet, Innovation & Development Director for Albéa. "They enable us to take a proactive position with our customers and respond rapidly to the needs of our market, while taking care to design products that meet sustainable development requirements. To optimize the tools, we chose new efficient solutions that are easy to implement, including six SolidWorks Sustainability licenses."

Being proactive and offering solutions as quickly as possible

Deploying SolidWorks Sustainability software in its design team, allows Albéa to quickly offer its customers eco-designed alternatives during the packaging development phase. The company can now directly measure and quantify the environmental impact of each design choice including the carbon footprint, the choice of materials or weight. In fact, iterations are performed throughout the design phase, and not only at the end, as in many eco-design processes. The Albéa LCA tool increases flexibility, speed and efficiency, an important asset in a field where the deadlines are critical for each new project.

Thanks to its partnership with SolidWorks Certified Reseller, Axemble, Albéa has become a driving force for helping customers meet both environmental and product criteria and critical design deadlines. The combination of Axemble’s support and Albéa’s recent technological investments positioned Albéa as a pioneer and leader in the use of eco-design tools in the plastic packaging industry.
