Voyager Brings Simplicity of Web-Style Search to GIS, Allowing Users to Quickly Find, Use and Better Manage Data Resources
TORONTO – September 28, 2010 – ESRI Canada today announced the addition of Voyager software to its portfolio of geographic information system (GIS) solutions. Developed by US-based company VoyagerGIS, Voyager is a powerful search and indexing software that allows users to quickly find spatial data resources on their desktops, servers or across the Internet, using simple intuitive Web-style searches. This helps organizations to catalogue and better manage their data, improve productivity by reducing the time spent searching for information, and reduce data and storage costs by eliminating duplicate datasets.
“Data can be quite expensive for organizations to acquire and maintain, especially if it's not reused or fully leveraged across the enterprise,” said Alex Miller, president, ESRI Canada. “Organizations need to know what data they have and where it's stored, and make this information easily accessible to all their users. Voyager is an excellent tool for obtaining a comprehensive view of an organization's data resources within and outside their GIS, and makes it easy for users to find the information they need to be productive.”
Find and Reuse Data, Reduce Costs and Improve Productivity
For day-to-day GIS users, Voyager can help improve productivity by quickly finding resources so that more time can be spent analyzing information and making decisions. It enables efficient searches of spatial data (maps, imagery, Web mapping services), office documents (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, etc.) and analytical models. It crawls content, regardless of location, and creates a master index that can be instantly retrieved using text searches, spatial extents or filtered searches. It can index an unlimited number of documents in many formats and different languages, helping organizations streamline information management and regain control over their data.
Database administrators and IT staff can use Voyager to determine which of their organization's datasets are commonly used and how they are utilized across the enterprise. The solution helps to identify and correct problems such as duplicate datasets, eliminating costs associated with repurchasing or recreating content. It also enables users to create a geographic portal in a few simple steps, allowing them to publish and share data across the organization. Its intuitive interface makes GIS more approachable to users in the organization who are not familiar with GIS data formats and other specialized software.
Voyager is particularly useful for organizations with large data holdings and those running mission-critical tasks, including those in public safety, defence and intelligence, government, conservation, oil and gas, and education.
Licensing and Availability
Voyager runs as a desktop application or server-based solution. It is offered in three editions: Analyst Edition for single users; Workgroup Edition for sharing data across a team or small organization; and Enterprise Edition for a large number of users. It fits within existing workflows and IT environments through an interface that is easy to install and configure. The solution requires ESRI's ArcGIS software to index GIS data, but can also be used without GIS software to index non-spatial data. Voyager is now available in Canada and is distributed by ESRI Canada.
