Manufacturers Take a Step to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Society of Manufacturing Engineers Presents Lean to Green Manufacturing Conference

DEARBORN, Mich., — September 09, 2010 — The demand for sustainability is growing stronger every day, and manufacturers are looking for ways to comply in order to reduce their impact on the environment and increase profitability.

Many are discovering that lean practices — which seek to eliminate all forms of waste — offer effective tools for sustainable manufacturing. To help practitioners better understand how green efforts can create growth and improve competitiveness, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers is presenting a Lean to Green Manufacturing Conferencein Columbus, Ohio, October 26-29, 2010.

“The leading similarity between the benefits of lean and the benefits of green is waste,” said Gary Mikola, SME conference manager. “This conference offers proven business practices to dramatically reduce the overall impact of manufacturing on the environment.”

The conference features presentations, workshops and case studies of successful methods attendees can immediately implement to reduce environmental concerns and enact changes in their manufacturing operations.

Some of the session topics are:

  • Creating a Sustainable Facility through Energy Efficiency Design
  • Energy Efficiency through Lean — Government and Industry Lessons in Collaboration
  • Best Practices in Being Green, Productive & Profitable
  • Increasing Sustainability of Lean Sigma Six — Environmental Wastes Audit
  • Design for Sustainability — Integrating Life Cycle Thinking

Additionally, conference sponsor, Green Energy Ohio (GEO), is hosting a pre-conference business-to-business workshop showcasing Ohio companies using clean energy systems and incentives.

The Lean to Green Manufacturing Conference also includes a panel discussion and case histories on the U.S. EPA’s E3 initiatives. The E3: Economy Energy and Environment program, designed as a model for collaboration among manufacturers, utilities, municipal governments and federal agencies, is already saving manufacturers millions of dollars annually.

Attendees can also discover how colleges and universities are providing the next generation of manufacturing professionals with both classroom and real-life learning experiences in manufacturing sustainability, energy efficiencies and the elimination and recycling of waste.

Additionally, attendees can choose to go on the “Green Crawl Tour” and visit area facilities that have successfully implemented lean principles and green strategies.

The Lean to Green Manufacturing Conference is sponsored by Green Energy Ohio, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Manufacturing Extension Partnershipof the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The fee is $525 for SME Members; $625 for Nonmembers. Student, educator, government and group discounts are available. For the most up-to-date information, and to register, visit www.sme.org/l2g.
