RGB Networks Teams Up With RealD to Showcase Advanced 3D Processing Capabilities at IBC 2010

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Sep 08, 2010 -- IBC 2010, Stand 4.B91 -- At IBC 2010, RGB Networks, the leader in network video processing, in collaboration with RealD Inc. (NYSE: RLD), a leading global licensor of 3D technologies, is demonstrating how RGB's technology allows video service providers to confidently launch 3D services over their current networks with minimal impact on their infrastructure and operations. The live demonstration highlights how RGB's products -- including the Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG), Broadcast Network Processor (BNP) and Dynamic Bandwidth Manager (DBM) -- enable video service providers to cost-effectively deliver 3D content today.

"While demand is certainly increasing for 3D, the challenges associated with deploying this type of bandwidth-hungry service -- namely the cost and impact on the network infrastructure -- can present one hurdle too many for providers," comments Nabil Kanaan, Sr. Director of Product Marketing at RGB Networks. "As our live demonstration will show, service providers can confidently deploy 3D content over their existing networks with minimal infrastructure and operations impact. This brings the cinema experience right into the living room, while still maintaining a lucrative business model."

The on-stand demonstration will highlight how 3D content can be delivered alongside existing video services, allowing service providers to gradually and cost-effectively introduce 3D programming into their channel line-ups. The demo will feature three of RGB's state-of-the-art platforms:

  • The award-winning Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG), RGB's integrated, carrier-class video processing platform, which allows transcoding of 3D streams between H.264 and MPEG-2 to bring 3D to legacy set-top boxes
  • The Broadcast Network Processor (BNP), which transrates broadcast MPEG-2 3D streams to optimize bandwidth with the best video quality possible
  • The Dynamic Bandwidth Manager (DBM), the industry's pioneering video-on-demand (VOD) real-time transrater, which optimizes bandwidth for efficient , high-quality delivery of on-demand 3D programming

"With 3D content moving to the television, our goal at RealD is to provide technology to help deliver a premium 3D viewing experience in the home similar to what viewers get in the theatre," said Steve Shannon, Executive Vice President of Consumer Electronics at RealD. "We are happy to collaborate with companies like RGB Networks that are working to ensure that 3D content is delivered in a pristine manner, unaffected by the necessary network processing that delivers it to the subscriber."

Executives from RGB will be available for briefings on stand 4.B91 for the duration of IBC, taking place at the RAI in Amsterdam on 10th to 14th September 2010.
