Software enables automaker to convert 2D sketches and physical styling models into high quality 3D digital models for further development
Brentwood, Essex. 7 September, 2010. Majenta Solutions Ltd., one of Europe’s leading providers of product development, manufacturing and product lifecycle information management software and IT infrastructure solutions, has announced that it has been awarded a contract by automotive vehicles manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover for the supply and implementation of 20 licences of Autodesk Alias Surface 3D modelling software.
The new software brings to 50 the number of licences of Autodesk Alias solutions of all types in use at Jaguar Land Rover. Installed in the car firm’s UK design studios the new software is required for the design development of the exterior and interior components of new Jaguar and Land Rover models.
More specifically, it will help to speed the process of transposing the designers’ and stylists’ ideas into a form that can be used downstream for further development in the digital world.
Both 3D scan data of clay styling models and 2D sketches produced with software such as Adobe Photoshop, or hand-drawn and then scanned, are imported into Alias Surface for use as the starting point for creating a digital 3D model. This digital model can then be used in the downstream design development process, either by exporting it to Jaguar Land Rover’s CATIA V5 CAD/CAM system for engineering detailing and incorporation into the CAD master model, or by using it in the machining of a new clay model for further refinement before the required Class A surfaces are generated.
A reduction in the overall styling and design development timescale, along with improved design data output are the main benefits that Jaguar Land Rover expects to get from the use of the Autodesk Alias Surface software.
