Clearpath Robotics, innovators in the design and manufacture of unmanned vehicle systems, announced today that it has partnered with the Institute for Aerospace Studies at the University of Toronto. Clearpath Robotics is working with Dr. Tim Barfoot, Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Autonomous Space Robotics. Dr. Barfoot is spearheading the Autonomous 3D Site Mapping Using Rover(s) project on behalf of U of T in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency and MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates.

Clearpath Robotics' Husky A100™, an unmanned research vehicle, will enable Dr. Barfoot's U of T research team to test mapping algorithms for future use on the lunar surface. Testing and analysis with the Husky A100 will be performed at the U of T MarsDome facility.

"This project will enable a mobile robot to map the lunar environment using a laser-based three-dimensional image sensor," says Dr. Barfoot." Our research will advance the state of the art by providing a new integrated mapping framework for outdoor problems and field testing results. Clearpath Robotics' Husky robot is the ideal size for our research and is capable of carrying the laser payload we plan to use, yet it is small enough to operate in the MarsDome facility."

"We are thrilled at the opportunity to collaborate with U of T. This partnership marks the beginning of a relationship with some of Canada's most significant robotics institutions," says Matt Rendall, CEO of Clearpath Robotics. "Space research requires durability and reliability beyond most terrestrial applications, and U of T is well equipped to deliver. The Husky is a dependable unmanned solution and is ideally suited to support Dr. Barfoot's work."
