OK Labs drives innovation and speeds time-to-market for next-generation mobile and connected devices
Chicago — January 21, 2010 — Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), the leading provider of embedded virtualization software for mobile phones and broadband Internet devices, and a member of the ARM® Connected Community™, today announced its participation in the
ARM Solution Center for Android, a collaborative resource for designers and developers of ARM technology-based products running on Android, the open-source platform from the Open Handset AllianceTM.
The OKL4 Microvisor helps device OEMs, mobile network operators (MNOs), and semiconductor suppliers meet next-generation requirements for mobile devices more quickly and less expensively. OK Labs
Secure HyperCell™ Technology also offers strong subsystem isolation, enhancing security and reliability. OK Labs provides support for popular mobile OS platforms with OS support packages including OK:Linux, OK:Symbian, and OK:Android.
With OK:Android, the OKL4 Microvisor enables Android to be used as a guest OS running in a secure cell on the ARM family of processors. OK:Android gives device OEMs, MNOs, and semiconductor suppliers a faster path to developing and delivering new mobile designs and lower cost devices, along with new levels of security and robustness.
“OKL4 is already deployed in 500 million handsets including a number of Android-based phones such as the HTC G1 and G2, the HTC Hero, and the Motorola Cliq and Droid,” said Steve Subar, President and CEO, OK Labs. “Among other benefits, mobile virtualization helps handset manufacturers migrate to Android quickly and efficiently while preserving legacy code and leveraging the competitive edge it provides.”
As the market for smartphones and other connected mobile and home devices grows, so do consumers’ expectations for these devices. The ARM Solution Center for Android provides designers and developers of Android-based devices the assurance that components meet all requirements for next-generation consumer electronic devices.
“Android was written for the ARM architecture, the leading processor architecture for Internet everywhere applications from mobile to the connected home,” said Kevin Smith, Vice President of Segment Marketing, ARM. “ARM is fortunate to be able to cultivate a partner ecosystem that ensures device manufacturers have the best development solutions at their disposal.”
