The British Cartographic Society Annual Symposium 2010 ‘Talking With Maps’

October 26, 2009 -- The British Cartographic Society Annual Symposium 2010 will open its doors on Wednesday 9th until Friday 11th June 2010 at the Village Hotel and Conference Centre in Nottingham.

The British Cartographic Society Annual Symposium 2010 is the only major event of its kind to take place in the UK, bringing together mapmakers, map users and other mapping enthusiasts from private, public, academic and government organisations. The event includes an educational conference stream, exhibition and plenty of networking opportunities as well as hosting the prestigious annual awards ceremony.

The theme for next year's conference is ‘Talking With Maps’. This will focus primarily on how to effectively communicate with maps to ensure your colleagues and clients correctly interpret your message.

Each year both members and non-members are welcome to submit papers to contribute to this event. This year The British Cartographic Society invites you to submit a paper for consideration if you have any interesting experience, or innovation, of:

  • Thematic and Statistical Mapping – how to best portray data of these types. Examples of good practice in clearly demonstrating a particular theme.
  • Mapping Sporting Events – with the World Cup starting at the end of the Symposium and the London Olympics just over two years away we are keen to invite presentations with a sporting emphasis.
  • Mapping in 3D – adding the third dimension of height to a standard 2D cartographic portrayal.
  • Accuracy, Precision, Reliability and Generalisation – what makes a good map? What sometimes needs to be left out and just how much can you trust a cartographic representation?
  • Cartography in the Media – whether it’s on TV, on the Internet or in the printed media, we are looking for examples of how are maps used to illustrate different situations both well and not so well.
  • Visualisation of Place – building on a theme from the AGI 2009 conference we would welcome papers that move from the importance of place to the importance of how you depict that place.
The closing date for submissions is Friday 8th January 2010. Successful submissions will be notified by no later than Friday 22nd January.

Proposed titles and abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted to:
Mr P Jones, Chair of Programme Committee, Defence Geographic Centre, Hotine 141, Elmwood Avenue, Feltham, Middx, TW13 7AH or e-mail to: Email Contact.

We look forward to receiving your applications and to seeing you at BCS Symposium 2010.
