March 16, 2009 -- Norcross, Georgia, USA — ERDAS announces that MFB-Geoconsulting, its distributor in Switzerland has been selected to use several ERDAS solutions in a research project to study the impact of tourism on the alpine environment.
The project is entitled "ProMeRe - Processes and Methods for Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Spatial Analysis and Development.” The project will incorporate massive amounts of geospatial information collected over the past 100 years to understand the changes in the landscape, as well as forecast future environmental implications. In addition to MFB-GeoConsulting’s participation, other project partners include Swisstopo, Leica Geosystems, University of Applied Science North-Eastern Switzerland (Institutes of Architecture and Geomatics) and University of Basel (Institute of Cultural Science).
MFB-GeoConsulting will use ERDAS APOLLO, ERDAS TITAN and IMAGINE Objective for their portion of this project. ERDAS APOLLO eliminates the walls between GIS, photogrammetry and remote sensing, extending geospatial data to business applications. Providing a unified enterprise platform, ERDAS APOLLO manages and serves large volumes of geospatial data located and distributed across an organization. ERDAS APOLLO implements an out-of-the box Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). ERDAS TITAN is a powerful geospatial desktop data sharing and visualization infrastructure that enables users to publish their “top drawer” data to anyone across the network. Combining inferential learning with expert knowledge in a true object-oriented feature extraction environment, IMAGINE Objective emulates human visual processing. IMAGINE Objective also encapsulates vector processing operators to produce GIS-ready data with minimal post processing.
“This is a unique project showing the change of a cultural landscape in the European Alps from the end of the 19th century up to today using most recent visualization and internet technologies. It is unique as with the involvement of Swisstopo, we have access to plenty of historic and recent data. Furthermore, we face a dramatic change in the area of investigation where an Egyptian investor will build a large tourist resort,” said Dr. Michael F. Baumgartner, Managing Director, MFB-GeoConsulting GmbH. “The project will result in an internet showcase presenting the most advanced possibilities of business solution applications in tourism and its visualization including spatio-temporal analyses in 2-, 3- and 4-D.”
“The selected ERDAS solutions will provide tools to clearly understand the region’s spatio-temporal changes, and a means to perform advanced classification and change detection,” said Thomas Bayer, Vice President, EMEA, ERDAS. “With ERDAS APOLLO and ERDAS TITAN, the geospatial information can also easily be managed and delivered across the enterprise or between desktops.”
