December 15, 2008 -- 1Spatial is pleased to announce that CSI-Piemonte has chosen Radius Topology as the key component to support the implementation of Italy's GIS TopographicDB Specification under the Intesa GIS initiative.
Intesa GIS, "Intesa Stato-Regioni-Enti Locali per la realizzazione dei sistemi informativi geografici", is an initiative sponsored by the Italian Government. It is an agreement between local, regional and national state bodies to develop technical specifications with a view to improving cartographic production and data capture methods. It follows the basic guidelines and methodologies described in the European Commission's INSPIRE1 Directive and is a major European SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure) project.
This project will be the first topological geodatabase to support public services in the Piedmont region, structured in accordance with Intesa GIS, Italy's GIS TopographicDB Specification. Regione. CSI-Piemonte is the project leader and their objectives are to design an information system geared towards service integration and interoperability. In order to comply with one of the basic tenets of INSPIRE, and therefore those of Intesa GIS, the solution has to provide the facility for data to be gathered once and used many times. A convenient and efficient data maintenance system for keeping the data current is also essential. Oracle is the master database for storing their data.
1Spatial's Radius Topology2 product has been selected as a key solution component to provide a persistent topology management solution for effective data quality management. The implemented solution will enhance and improve the contribution that local authorities across the Piedmont region can provide to its citizens through the provision of best of breed technological support to its public administrations.
Once completed, the project will be among the first Italian implementations of a region-wide geographical database in accordance to the Intesa GIS specification.
Marco Cavagnoli, CSI-Piemonte GIS Responsible commented:
"Since its establishment CSI-Piemonte looks after Piedmontese public bodies' data and manages those data according to an idea that promotes interoperability and 'knowledge sharing' among public administrations. Nowadays, especially for spatial data, changes are frequent, there is a large amount of data to manage, there are many stakeholders and characteristics (e.g. quality, integrity, consistency, performances, etc... ) are required to be of an increasingly high standard. We need to exploit the best ways for completing an excellent job."
Martin Gregory, Sales Manager for Southern Europe, 1Spatial added:
"We are very pleased to be participating in another European SDI initiative where we are providing a solution to help with the data integration and quality elements. CSI-Piemonte really understands the value of using our tools in this environment and we look forward to working on this project with the Italian GI community."
1. INSPIRE is the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe.
2. Radius Topology is a flexible and lightweight component that extends Oracle9i or Oracle Database 10g and provides dramatic improvements to the quality, speed and consistency of spatial data handling.
