Smart Data Strategies Provides Historical Preservation Solution to the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District

A leader of GIS services and products to preserve 80 years of historical documents using industry standard GIS technology

August 26, 2008 --
Smart Data Strategies, Inc. is pleased to announce it has been selected by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District to provide a data collection and retrieval system to preserve the District’s historical documents.

The data collection traces the District’s irrigation patterns and includes 1927 and 1941 appraisal sheets, circa 1927 property maps, circa 1940 linen property maps, and 1949 property maps. Most of the documents are unique maps and records that require white glove treatment to maintain document integrity.

Smart Data Strategies will inventory, scan, and index the records, and build a geodatabase to provide a referencing and retrieval system. Smart Data Strategies will utilize DREAMaps™ Doc integrated with ArcGIS to provide GIS linkage and a complete document management solution. Upon project completion, the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District will be able to electronically maintain, store, and analyze over 80 years of geographic information documenting part of their past.

About the District
The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District located in Albuquerque, New Mexico was formed in the 1920s with the express purpose of draining the Valley’s waterlogged lands, reclaiming them for agriculture and providing irrigation water, drainage and flood control for future generations. The District’s irrigation system provides irrigation water, flood control, and drainage to and from 70,000 acres of croplands from Cochiti on the north, to the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge on the south.
