Typical critical path method (CPM) products do simplistic calculations, based primarily on task durations, not accounting for the overlap among tasks. Professionals recognize the importance of treating relationships with the same concern that they apply to tasks, but some relationships are hard and fast, while others are simply applied for convenience to account for overlapping work.
With Pertmaster's new RD-CPM capability, the planner can relax certain schedule restraints using codes in order to model alternative approaches and contracting strategies. The rationale for each restraint can be defined, and then sets of restraints can be applied or not during schedule computation. For example, restraints can either be removed or applied based on certain rules or conditions, in order to see their impact on delivery dates and float.
Professional schedulers and claims consultants have long known the importance of recording information about these restraints and the relationships of preceding and succeeding activities on project delivery. Now, with Pertmaster's RD-CPM capability, they can model relationships accurately and realistically, helping them to further analyze the likelihood of meeting project targets. The result is a schedule that is reliable, accurate and deliverable on time and under an appropriately set budget.
"Pertmaster's RD-CPM capability will revolutionize how expert schedulers analyze and communicate schedules," said Richard Faris, executive vice president, Primavera. "It changes the paradigm by putting the focus on precedence relationships, the real driver of schedules -- and giving schedulers more analytical power than they have ever had before."
"Primavera is the first company to incorporate RD-CPM into its software and the first to be certified as RD-CPM compliant," said the creator of RD-CPM, Frederic Plotnick, Esq., P.E. "Primavera's customers will be better equipped to conduct schedule analysis, identify risks and make course corrections to get their projects back on track."
"The achievement of RD-CPM certification is another important action by Primavera to maintain and extend its leadership role in the project and portfolio management market," said Joel M. Koppelman, CEO, Primavera. "It is yet another example of our efforts to deliver rich, industry-savvy functionality to thought leaders and professionals."
In addition to its robust integration with Primavera P6(R), the new version of Pertmaster also includes an improved integration with Microsoft(R) Project (MSP). Users are now able to import multiple MSP projects and define a master/sub project relationship to improve analysis capabilities across imported projects.
Other new features in this release of Pertmaster include: -- Program level rollups: In very large schedules, it can be difficult to assess the big picture and identify what is affecting progress. With Pertmaster, managers can quickly understand at a glance the relationships between summary activities, which events are driving others, and why it is happening. -- Weather modeling: Rain, wind and snow can play havoc with a schedule. This release includes weather modeling, which allows project managers to assess the impact of weather related risks and account for time-based contingencies. -- Crystal Reports(TM): Many organizations prefer to use certain tools to generate reports. Pertmaster provides users with greater control over their report creation and distribution by supporting Crystal Reports in the Risk Register, giving customers the ability to choose how they want to see their data.
