SMPTE Launches Professional Development Academy

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—December 21, 2007— The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) today announced the launch of its Professional Development Academy (SMPTE PDA). This new resource will provide convenient opportunities to learn about key technologies important to professional growth.

The inaugural event, SMPTE PDA Now, is a live, interactive webcast Jan. 17, 2008, from 1-2 p.m. ET called "IPTV - What Does it Really Mean and How Does it Work?" This session will discuss the end-to-end architectural components in an IPTV chain, from the source to IP-based Set Top Boxes, in the home. It covers the services which can be provided by IPTV, the role of IPTV middleware in enabling them, and how IPTV can provide a platform for integration of video, voice and data (a.k.a the triple play).

SMPTE PDA's guest speaker for this event is Greg Thompson, chief video architect, Video & Content Networking Business Unit, Cisco.

Beginning in February, the webcasts will take place on the second Thursday of each month and will cover topics such as Tapeless Image Acquisition - What to Expect from Those Who Have Made the Transition, Image Acquisition, 3D Display Technologies, Color Science and Metadata; MXF; Non-essence Data.

Each session will cover a single technical topic and will be designed to address specific technical aspects, technical challenges or answer questions associated with technologies of high interest to the engineering and technical communities within the motion imaging industry.

SMPTE PDA Now sessions are available as a SMPTE member benefit. Non-members may attend the live event for $49. Registration is available at www.smpte.org. If you are unable to attend a live event, sessions are recorded and made available to SMPTE members for later viewing.

In addition to SMPTE PDA Now, SMPTE PDA will provide a number of learning education services such as html text-based tutorials and technical papers (SMPTE PDA Docs), onsite seminars, formal distance education courses, and eventually podcasts and mobile learning content. Additional content is scheduled for launch in 2008.
