Techwell Expands LCD Display Processor Line; Introduction of New Display Processors Targeting Emerging In-Car Display Market

SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Jan. 5, 2006— Techwell, Inc., a designer of mixed signal integrated circuits for multiple video applications in the consumer, security surveillance and automotive markets, today announced the expansion of its line of LCD display processors with the introduction of the TW8804, TW8806 and TW8807. Targeting in-car LCD displays, including front console, rear seat and flip down displays, the new display processors are designed specifically to offer automotive customers a high performance, cost effective one-chip solution. The TW8800 family offers advanced image processing including edge enhancement and black/white stretch functionality in addition to an integrated programmable timing controller and multiple analog and digital video inputs. In addition, the TW8800 family meets the automotive industrial standard. The TW8804 recently began mass production in Q4 2005 and the TW8806 and TW8807 will begin sampling in Q1 2006.

"Techwell first introduced its integrated LCD display processor in 1999 and these newest generation products demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the in-car display market," said Tom Krause, Director of Business Development at Techwell, Inc. "The purpose of the TW8804, TW8806 and TW8807 are to provide a high video quality, small form factor, low power and cost effective solution to customers developing in-car displays to support entertainment, navigation and driver information applications."

The latest generation of the TW8800 family, the TW8804 combines Techwell's TW9900 NTSC/PAL/SECAM video decoder technology with a high performance 2D comb filter and support for all popular video formats. To meet the growing demand for low cost, high quality TFT panel controllers used in rear seat in-car entertainment displays, the TW8804 contains the logic required to convert standard video signals into the digital control and data signals required to drive various TFT panel types. The next generation TW8806 reduces the size and power consumption compared to TW8804. TW8807 is pin-to-pin compatible with TW8806 and includes an integrated timing controller that supports analog LCD panels. Multiple customers currently using the 8800 series will be able to migrate to these next generation low cost, high quality LCD display solutions.

About the TW8804

The TW8804 contains the logic required to convert standard video signals into the digital control and data signals required to drive various TFT panel types. An integrated YPbPr/RGB component input allows direct connection to DVD, PIP and TTX sources. It supports TFT panel resolutions up to 1280 by 1024 (SXGA/WXGA) with either 1 or 2-pixel/clock formats. For more natural scaling, the TW8804 includes a Panorama/water glass feature with advanced scaling from 4:3 to 16:9. The TW8804 includes multiple video enhancement functions including low angle improvement/edge enhancement, black and white stretch and sharpness control. In addition, the TW8804 integrates a programmable timing controller (TCON) to reduce system costs for in-car LCD display customers.

About the TW8806 and TW8807

Techwell's TW8806 and TW8807 are pin-to-pin compatible LCD display processors with an embedded NTSC/PAL/SECAM TV decoder and on-chip programmable timing controller. This level of integration enables the panel to be used as a stand-alone LCD display for in car display applications including rear seat and flip down entertainment systems. In addition, the TW8806 and TW8807 are effective display solutions for portable DVD and portable LCD TV applications. The TW8806 and TW8807 cores operate at 1.8V, IOs operate at 3.3V and are packaged in a small 128-pin PQFP package. The TW8806 supports digital LCD panels and the TW8807 supports analog LCD panels.

Pricing and Availability

The TW8804 began mass production in October 2005. Manufactured by TSMC in Taiwan, the TW8804 utilizes a small 160 pin LQFP package and is aggressively priced. The TW8806 and TW8807 will begin sampling in Q1 2006 and will commence mass production in Q3 2006.
