The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District contracted with Woolpert for these projects, which are part of a multimillion-dollar master plan developed by Woolpert.
MINERAL CITY, Ohio, Sept. 28, 2021 — (PRNewswire) —MINERAL CITY, Ohio, Sept. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Woolpert has been contracted by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District to redesign and renovate the Atwood Activity Center at Atwood Lake Park in Mineral City, Ohio. Woolpert will provide civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering, as well as architectural design, bid process and construction for the facility, which serves as the campground hub. Atwood Lake Park is one of the most frequented parks in MWCD's seven sites.
Under this project, the 35-year-old Atwood Activity Center will expand from 6,200 square feet to 8,800 square feet and effectively double the existing gathering space. The renovation will add an eat-in dining area, refurbish the camp store, renovate the kitchen and expand the nature center, while replacing and extending the reach of the heating and cooling system. The project also will add an outdoor seating area.
Woolpert Architect and Program Director James Dobrozsi said the renovation provided the most cost-effective option for the MWCD.
"Muskingum had been planning to build a new Atwood Activity Center, but it would have been a multimillion-dollar project," Dobrozsi said. "This alternative will cost much less by taking advantage of the existing infrastructure, while adding and reconfiguring space to attain the desired amenities. This was the best solution to address their needs and their budget."
Under a separate contract, Woolpert was selected by the MWCD to provide full design services for the new Tappan Welcome Center at Tappan Lake Park in Deersville, Ohio. The $3 million facility will be 4,300 square feet and resemble the Woolpert-designed Atwood Welcome Center, which opened in 2016. These projects are part of the MWCD Master Plan, which Woolpert developed nearly a decade ago.
"The Muskingum Watershed covers more than 8,000 square miles, or about 20 percent of Ohio, and their dedication to providing flood reduction, water conservation and recreational opportunities is unparalleled," Dobrozsi said. "We are fortunate to have forged a relationship with Muskingum and are honored to support their great work however we can."
Both projects are scheduled to open in 2023.
