3D-annotated models more and more replace 2D-drawings
Sacramento, CA – May 19th, 2020 – In the past, 2D drawings were the only legally binding documents. Now, it is not uncommon for 3D annotated models to replace them. In the MBD environment, KISTERS 3DViewStation supports several file formats and provides a rich set of interactive functionalities.
Present day 3D CAD data often contains manufacturing information, which is called: PMI (Product Manufacturing Information). The PMI replaces detail views, sections, tolerances and surface quality hints from former 2D drawings. The concept is frequently called MBD (Model Based Definition), CAD vendors also reference GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing). As we move into a future where the 3D model is increasingly the master, we are seeing that skipping the 2D drawing step altogether allows for much faster communication and change requests.
KISTERS 3DViewStation has proven to be an efficient tool to support MBD initiatives for numerous major projects. It supports many native CAD file formats such as: Catia, NX, Creo (including their specific 3D annotations), and also standard file formats like JT, STEP or 3D-PDF. “When 3DViewStation reads CAD data, pre-defined PMI views are retained. After activation the camera will be positioned correctly, sections may be activated automatically and only those PMIs, which belong to the respective view, will be displayed.” said Kelly Baumann, KISTERS North America Business Development Manager. “KISTERS 3DViewStation also allows you to compare revisions, and it allows you to create your own markups such as: lines, texts or balloons. Update or create new views, save them out as PMIs in the KISTERS 3DVS (file format) or neutral file formats like JT, STEP or 3D-PDF. There are customers that use 3DViewStation solely to translate the native CAD files including its PMIs into a neutral file format.” she added. “Finally, all of 3DViewStation’s capabilities can be used independently or from within a leading system.”
Known for its modern user-interface, high performance viewing, advanced analysis and integration capabilities into leading systems, 3DViewStation ships with current and mature importers for a broad range of 3D and 2D formats including i.e. Catia, NX, Creo, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, Inventor, Revit, JT, 3D-PDF, STEP, DWG, DXF, DWF, MS Office and many more.
