WGIC releases report on Geospatial Information and Privacy

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, March 16, 2020 - The World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC) announced today the release of a new report ‘Geospatial Information and Privacy: Policy Perspectives and Imperatives for the Geospatial Industry’. The report covers the fundamental provisions of data protection and privacy policy and its implications for the geospatial industry. It also provides legal regulations and processes, along with a snapshot of discussions and developments occurring around the world.

WGIC is an association of companies that represents the entire ecosystem of the geospatial industry, aimed to enhance the role of the geospatial industry and strengthen its contributions to both the global economy and society. It facilitates the exchange of knowledge within the geospatial industry, and the co-creation of more significant business opportunities for the geospatial industry. Represent business interest, share perspectives of the geospatial industry, and lastly, undertakes policy advocacy and dialogue with public authorities, multilateral agencies, and other relevant bodies.

Arnout Desmet, Chair of the WGIC policy development and advocacy committee, remarked, “With the publication of this report, the Policy Committee hopes to inform the WGIC members and the geospatial industry on the policy perspectives and obligations related to geospatial information and privacy. We also want to stimulate a broader and well-informed debate with all stakeholders in the public and private sectors, and we welcome all feedback and suggestions for further research and collaboration around this theme.”

Barbara J. Ryan, WGIC’s Policy Advisor, said, “Clearly, the value of this report will be determined by its use and uptake. I am optimistic that those in both the private and public sectors will find it to be one of the most easily read publications, potentially a primer, on the important and relevant topic of personal privacy protection in the geospatial arena.”
