The RISC-V Foundation Receives Donation from Arduino to Further Strengthen its Open Source Community

Arduino donates $5,000 to the RISC-V Foundation to stimulate open source collaboration for hardware and software design and implementation

BERKELEY, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — July 9, 2019 — The RISC-V Foundation, a non-profit corporation controlled by its members to drive the adoption and implementation of the free and open RISC-V instruction set architecture (ISA), today announced that it received a donation of $5,000 USD from Arduino to advance the RISC-V ecosystem and efforts focused on open source hardware and software development. The RISC-V Foundation is laser focused on accelerating the RISC-V ecosystem, driving tech innovation forward and fostering industry-wide collaboration. This donation will further support the Foundation’s mission in delivering future developments of open silicon and hardware implementations.

“The RISC-V Foundation is appreciative of this gracious donation from the open source trailblazers at Arduino,” said Calista Redmond, CEO of the RISC-V Foundation. “Mutual support is absolutely necessary for open source communities like ours. As we support one another, we become more effective in changing the way the industry works together and collaborates. Arduino’s contribution pushes us forward as we create a new kind of open hardware and software ecosystem. Thanks to the Arduino team.”

Arduino Co-Founder, Massimo Banzi, commented: “At Arduino we understand that open source institutions and projects greatly depend on donations and community support. Our gift to the RISC-V Foundation is a token of our gratitude as we value the RISC-V ecosystem for its contributions to the open source community and we look forward to continuing to witness the growth of this ecosystem.”

Banzi formally announced that Arduino is donating $50,000 to 10 organizations whose shared efforts make a difference for the worldwide open source community. The announcement was held on May 18, 2019 in San Mateo, California at the Maker Faire Bay Area.

About RISC-V Foundation

RISC-V (pronounced “risk-five”) is a free and open ISA enabling a new era of processor innovation through open standard collaboration. Founded in 2015, the RISC-V Foundation comprises more than 250 members building the first open, collaborative community of software and hardware innovators powering a new era of processor innovation. Born in academia and research, RISC-V ISA delivers a new level of free, extensible software and hardware freedom on architecture, paving the way for the next 50 years of computing design and innovation.

The RISC-V Foundation, a non-profit corporation controlled by its members, directs the future development and drives the adoption of the RISC-V ISA. Members of the RISC-V Foundation have access to and participate in the development of the RISC-V ISA specifications and related HW / SW ecosystem.
