DATE 2019 in Florence: Highlighting Embedded Systems meeting Hyperscale and High-Performance Computing and Model-Based Design of Intelligent Systems

Call for Papers

DATE is the top scientific event in Design, Automation, and Test of microelectronics and embedded systems for the academic and industrial research communities worldwide. It provides a unique networking opportunity, bringing together designers and design automation users, researchers and vendors, as well as specialists in hardware and software design, test and manufacturing of electronic circuits and systems.

In 2019, the conference will take place for the first time in Florence, Italy. Florence is the capital of Tuscany Region, centrally located and very easy to reach via an international airport hub. Art, culture, modernity and vibrancy: Florence is much more than the cradle of Renaissance. Vaunting an unparalleled past of incredible accomplishments, Florence is a contemporary city that offers year-round entertainment. Striking architecture and monuments, museums of masterpieces, as well as fashion, theatres, gardens, modern art exhibitions, excellent places to eat and drink, and an international flair that has always set this city apart. It is time to fall in love with Florence. It is situated on the plain of the Arno River between the hills that made this region famous, surrounded by towns, villages and enchanting landscapes. Due to its history, today Florence can offer a lot of astonishing venues like the Palazzo Pitti or Palazzo Vecchio, the Town Hall of Florence, many churches like the Basilica di Santa Croce, the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella and also some open-air museums such as Giardino delle Rose and Giardino di Boboli. Florence is also a modern destination that offers many opportunities for events and activities for guests. In 2019, all over Italy but particularly Florence and the nearby hometown Vinci will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of the death of the genius Leonardo da Vinci.

The five-day eventcovers the design process, test, and automation tools for electronics, ranging from integrated circuits to distributed embedded systems. The conference scope includes both hardware and embedded software design issues. It also includes the elaboration of design requirements and new architectures for challenging application fields such as internet of things, multimedia, healthcare, smart energy, and automotive systems .

Two Special Days in the programme will focus on areas bringing new challenges to the system design community Embedded meets Hyperscale and HPC and Model-Based Design of Intelligent Systems. Each of the Special Days will have a full programme of keynotes, panels, tutorials and technical presentations.

Embedded meets Hyperscale and HPC: Heterogeneous computing with multiple, specialised processors and application-specific accelerators is vital for embedded systems to meet performance, latency, and efficiency targets. The same goals of fast, efficient, and cost-effective processing are also gating factors for the evolution of hyperscale data centre (DC) and high-performance computing (HPC) and Moore’s law no longer provides the necessary efficiency gains. Hence, we can witness a spread of technologies pioneered in embedded systems to hyperscale DCs and HPC systems, e.g., the use of specialised computing resources, massive parallelism, model-driven and domain-specific programming, task models, co-scheduling, and others. The theme of this special day is to highlight this confluence of methods and technologies to better understand, how heterogeneous computing is shaping the future of hyperscale DCs and HPC.

Model-Based Design of Intelligent Systems: The complexity of today’s cyber-physical systems is already enormous, but the rise of intelligent systems will further accelerate the design complexity. Good models and associated design processes are needed to keep the development under control and deliver high-quality systems in time. Model-based design places models at the centre of the development cycle. It has successfully been used to develop embedded systems, starting from models in well-defined modelling formalisms, that can be analysed and from which software and hardware realisations can be automatically generated. This special day will explore all that is needed to lift model-based design into the era of intelligent systems. The special day will address, among other things, model-based design frameworks for IoT systems, model-based machine learning, and application of model-based design in safety-critical and autonomous systems. The special day will also highlight the upcoming challenges in this domain to invite the DATE community to help to overcome them.

The Organizing Committee welcomes paper submissions for standard oral presentation and interactive presentation, which must be submitted electronically by 9 September 2018.

The vivid accompanying exhibition (running from Tuesday to Thursday) provides a unique networking opportunity for vendors of tools and services for the design, development and test of Systems-on-Chip, IPs, Embedded Systems, ASICs, FPGAs and PCBs. Furthermore, it is an excellent venue for industry representatives to meet university professors and especially for PhD Students to meet their future employers. A full programme in the Exhibition Theatre will again combine presentations by exhibiting companies, best-practice reports by industry leaders on their latest design projects, and selected conference special sessions. Additional hot-spots in the exhibition are the University Booth, where leading universities and research institutes present their most recent research results with hardware and software demonstrators, as well as the dedicated European Projects Booth and the Exhibition Campus. Proposals for the Exhibition Theatre have to be submitted electronically by 26 October 2018.

On the first day of the DATE week, in-depth technical tutorials are given by leading experts in their respective fields. The half-day afternoon tutorials are well-suited for researchers, tool developers and system designers. On Friday, workshops concentrate on specialised emerging research and application topics. Proposals for Monday Tutorials and Friday Workshops have to be submitted electronically by 9 September 2018.

The Organising Committee also encourages proposals for Special Sessions, European Projects, the Exhibition Theatre, the University Booth as well as the PhD Forum.Particular attention and consideration will be given to Special Session proposals matching this year’s technical programme and exhibition focus on the internet of things, artificial intelligence, smart energy, security, automotive, space, healthcare, robotics and industry 4.0.
