Parade Technologies Releases Automotive-Grade eDP Timing Controller for LCD Displays up to 4K Resolution

Upgraded Tcon chip extends Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) into automotive display applications

SAN JOSE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 16, 2018Parade Technologies, Ltd. (Taiwan OTC: 4966.TWO), a leading high-speed interface, video display, and touch controller IC supplier, today announced the DP667V, a new automotive grade selection of the company’s popular DP667 eDP Timing Controller (Tcon). The DP667V meets the rigorous automotive AEC-Q100 stress test qualification requirements and operates over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +105 deg C.

The DP667V is ideally suited for larger, high-resolution displays typically used for automotive infotainment and navigation display applications including center console placement. The device is designed to enable LCD panels with a resolution up to 4Kx2K, and two devices can be used for panel resolutions up to 8Kx2K. Up to 30-bit color is supported enabling superior image quality.

The DP667V includes a built-in eDP (Embedded DisplayPort) receiver that supports up to four lanes of the HBR2 link rate of 5.4 Gbit/sec. Only one lane, or one wire pair, of the high-speed interface is required to support a 1080p or 1920x1080 resolution panel at 60 frames-per-second and 24-bit color depth. All four lanes are used for 4Kx2K resolution.

The eDP interface provides direct-connect compatibility with many SoC devices and other video source ICs that provide the common eDP digital audio/video output. Because the eDP interface data is already serialized, in many automotive use cases this avoids the need for additional proprietary serializer and de-serializer chips to transport the data stream across the box-to-box interface. The VESA eDP Standard includes a link training protocol that adjusts transmitter signal characteristics to compensate for signal degradation within the signal path. This enables the eDP interface to be used directly chip-to-chip, including through the box-to-box cable, with a total reach 2 meters or more, depending on bit rate and channel properties. Reach can be further extended through the use of repeater devices.

“Because of its wide adoption in the notebook PC and tablet industry, eDP has become the standard interface for high resolution embedded panels in devices other than smart phones,” said Jimmy Chiu, Executive VP of Marketing at Parade Technologies. “Automotive makers are now designing future car interiors with larger, higher-resolution panels that consumers have grown accustomed to and now want in their cars. This has created a new demand and new market for eDP panels that meet automotive quality and environmental requirements.”

Availability

The DP667V is available in a 13x13mm DRQFN RoHS and halogen free package. Samples are shipping now.
