ESD Alliance Reports EDA Industry Revenue Increase For Q3 2017

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jan. 15, 2018 — (PRNewswire) —  The Electronic System Design (ESD) Alliance Market Statistics Service (MSS) today announced that the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 8 percent for Q3 2017 to $2262.2 million, compared to $2093.7 million in Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased by 11.5 percent.

"For the second consecutive quarter, the EDA industry reported increases in all product categories and geographic regions," said Walden C. Rhines, board sponsor for the ESD Alliance MSS and president and CEO of Mentor, a Siemens business. "The Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module and Semiconductor IP product categories reported double-digit growth in Q3, as did the Japan and Asia-Pacific regions."

Companies that were tracked employed 39,044 professionals in Q3 2017, an increase of 9.9 percent compared to the 35,515 people employed in Q3 2016, and up 2 percent compared to Q2 2017.

Revenue by Product Category
Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), generated revenue of $709 million in Q3 2017, which represents a 6.3 percent increase compared to Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 9.3 percent.

IC Physical Design & Verification revenue was $450.9 million in Q3 2017, a 2.2 percent increase compared to Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average increased 6.0 percent.

Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB & MCM) revenue of $184 million for Q3 2017 represents an increase of 13.4 percent compared to Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average for PCB & MCM increased 18.7 percent.

Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) revenue totaled $811.2 million in Q3 2017, a 12.5 percent increase compared to Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average increased 17 percent.

Services revenue was $107 million in Q3 2017, an increase of 4.4 percent compared to Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average increased 1.8 percent.

Revenue by Region
The Americas, EDA's largest region, purchased $978.4 million of EDA products and services in Q3 2017, an increase of 4.9 percent compared to Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 9.6 percent.

Revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) increased 7.3 percent in Q3 2017 compared to Q3 2016 on revenues of $318.8 million. The EMEA four-quarters moving average increased 10.7 percent.

Third quarter 2017 revenue from Japan increased 10.4 percent to $235.3 million compared to Q3 2016. The four-quarters moving average for Japan increased 7.8 percent.

The Asia/Pacific (APAC) region revenue increased to $729.7 million in Q3 2017, an increase of 12.2 percent compared to the third quarter of 2016. The four-quarters moving average increased 15.9 percent.
