America Makes and ANSI Launch Phase 2 of Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative

Kick-off Meeting Scheduled for September 7th in Philadelphia; Pre-meeting Webinar August 17th

NEW YORK, July 27, 2017 — (PRNewswire) —   America Makes and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) today announced the launch of phase 2 of the America Makes & ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC) with a kick-off meeting scheduled for September 7th in Philadelphia. Major goals of phase 2 include expanding the discussion of standards needs for polymers and other materials besides metals and engaging experts from other industry sectors such as automotive, heavy equipment, energy, consumer products, and tooling. A free webinar to provide an overview of the AMSC and how to prepare for the September 7th meeting will be held on August 17th from 2:00 – 3:00 pm EDT.

The AMSC was formed in March 2016 to coordinate and accelerate the development of industry-wide additive manufacturing standards and specifications. The overarching goal is to achieve a consistent, harmonized, and non-contradictory set of additive manufacturing standards. In February 2017, the AMSC published a Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing (Version 1.0). The roadmap describes the current standardization landscape for additive manufacturing, including published standards and standards in development. It also provides recommendations to address gaps where there is a perceived need for additional standardization work, including in many cases additional research and development activity. The document was largely developed by representatives from the aerospace, defense, and medical industries.

Since publication of the roadmap, America Makes and ANSI have been actively promoting the document at industry events and meeting with the standards developing organizations (SDOs) involved in the project to discuss their efforts to advance the roadmap's recommendations. The introduction of new perspectives and expertise from other sectors during phase 2 will help to identify potentially overlooked gaps. In addition, updates on previously identified gaps will be a focus. The target date for publication of the roadmap version 2.0 is June 2018.

The AMSC meeting will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. EDT on September 7th at Penn State at The Philadelphia Navy Yard, 4960 South 12th Street, Penn State Building 661, Symposium Room, Philadelphia, PA. The draft agenda and logistical information are available on the AMSC website. Advance registration for both in-person ($30) and remote participation is required. Meeting participants should familiarize themselves with the roadmap in advance so they are prepared to contribute to the breakout group for their sector. Participation in the AMSC is open to additive manufacturing stakeholders that have operations in the U.S.

Jim Williams, president, All Points Additive, and chair of the AMSC commented: "We look forward to continuing the good collaboration among affected stakeholders that led to the development of the roadmap. We welcome newcomers to the process from other industry sectors and experts on polymers as we work to expand the content of the document to add value for all segments of industry that want to make use of additive manufacturing technologies."
