MACOM Announces Reference Design Supporting All Requirements for Next Generation CoaXPress 2.0 Standard

  • CoaXPress is emerging as the industry standard of choice for high-speed imaging, featuring bandwidth scalability and long cable reach
  • MACOM’s CoaXPress reference design utilizes our award-winning 12G-SDI Cable Driver and Equalizer
  • Reference design available today upon request

LOWELL, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 12, 2017MACOM Technology Solutions Inc. (“MACOM”), today announced the availability of a reference design that supports all requirements for the emerging 12.5Gbps CoaXPress 2.0 standard (CXP-12). The updated standard is expected to be released in the latter half of 2017.

CoaXPress is one of the industry’s leading standards for machine vision, medical imaging, life sciences, broadcast and defense. Featuring high speed asymmetric serial data over standard coaxial cable, CoaXPress is quickly emerging to be the standard of choice due to its unique combination of bandwidth scalability and long cable reach. The current standard supports speeds up to 6.25Gbps and reaches up to 40 meters over Belden 1694A cable. Multiple cables may be used to scale the bandwidth to the needs of the application.

MACOM’s CXP-12 reference design utilizes our off the shelf award winning M23428G-33 12G-SDI Cable Driver and M23544G-14 12G-SDI Equalizer with integrated reclocker. Introduced in 2014 for the broadcast video market, this industry-proven chipset has continued shipping in volume since 2015 and has enabled the transition of broadcast technology to support the transmission of Ultra-High Definition Video at 60 frames per second over a single coaxial cable. By leveraging this innovation, MACOM is able to offer a solution that enables the emerging CoaXPress 2.0 standard with support for downstream transmission at 12.5Gbps and upstream transmission at 42Mbps. The reference design outlines detailed schematics for utilizing MACOM’s chipset in both a frame grabber and camera. All CoaXPress requirements are met, including the ability to deliver power to the camera over the same cable.

“The greatest challenge in developing the CXP-12 requirements was how to double the bandwidth while still supporting long cable runs using common coaxial cable,” said Mike Fukatsu, Director of Product Marketing, High-Performance Analog, at MACOM. “By leveraging the small signal equalization expertise used to support broadcast video infrastructure, MACOM offers the industry a cost effective, high-performance solution that will enable the many emerging applications adopting CoaXPress.”

The reference design defines a camera interface circuit centered around the M23428G-33 12G Cable Driver, which provides the 12.5Gbps downstream transmission path. Included in this circuit is a low speed receiver which handles the 42Mbps upstream control data. The reference circuit for the Frame grabber is centered around the M23544G-14 12G Equalizer with integrated reclocker. MACOM’s circuit includes a low speed driver to provide the 42Mpbs control data to the camera. An evaluation board which includes the reference design for both the CXP-12 Frame grabber interface and CXP-12 Camera interface is also available.

The M23428G-33 12G-SDI Cable Driver and M23544G-14 12G-SDI Equalizer with integrated reclocker are in production and available to order today.
