DAQRI Acquires Team From Physics Think Tank Founded by Seamus Blackley, Microsoft Veteran Known for Developing the Xbox

Team of Scientists and Engineers Charged with Developing Business Applications for DAQRI Software Defined Light

PASADENA, Calif., March 15, 2017 — (PRNewswire) —  DAQRI, the LA-based technology company and leading Augmented Reality (AR) platform and solutions developer, recently recruited Seamus Blackley and key members of his team from Heat Engine, LLC, a rapid prototyping and development laboratory. Blackley, a high energy physicist is best known for assembling the team that designed and developed the original Xbox game console.

Blackley and his team of approximately 15 engineers and scientists have joined DAQRI to continue the innovation and production of Software Defined Light (SDL). A recent scientific breakthrough from DAQRI, SDL uses software and a phase modulator to control the speed of light and create an entirely new three-dimensional light field.

"DAQRI first contracted my team to explore rapid innovations around SDL, and the use of SDL technology from the DAQRI Smart HUD™ to power future opportunities like holographic 3D printing," said Blackley. "Pretty quickly, we realized the tremendous scientific potential, and were excited by the results.  At that point, I started talking with DAQRI about coming on full-time with my team to accelerate the potential behind this amazing technology."

Blackley and his team will remain focused on the DAQRI vision to expand human potential, and push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of SDL and augmented reality, which are at the core of the DAQRI Visual Operating System™(Vos). The team has already demonstrated the use of SDL in instantaneous 3D printing and will pursue additional applications, including new forms of LiDAR, terrestrial and space communication, new computer and television displays, and non-invasive medical imaging.

Blackley's research team is comprised of PhD-educated, award-winning scientists and engineers.

"Seamus and his team are some of the brightest scientists in the field," said Brian Mullins, CEO at DAQRI. "We were excited to bring their experience and intellectual horsepower into our team to help us deliver on the potential of Software Defined Light and the DAQRI AR platform. When the 'Father of the Xbox' wants to drop everything he's working on to explore a new technological breakthrough, that's when you know you're onto something big."
