InterSpec Announces Survey Results of Architects & Engineers Showing Potential Growth in Industry

Survey also indicates industry slow to adopt technology that could increase productivity

South Portland, Maine, November 15, 2016 -- In a survey of architects and engineers, 68% of the respondents say that they expect to see significant growth in the number and size of projects in the next year.  At the same time, the results show that staff sizes are not increasing proportionately and more work on specifications is falling to the project architects in architecture firms.

The survey is commissioned annually by InterSpec, the industry leader in Automated Specification Management Software and specification consulting.

The respondents also report that 91% of all firms are still writing specs in house.

The survey shows that the number of firms using Autodesk Revit, building information modeling software, has more than doubled since last year, 32% to 69% in 2016, an indicator of the need to produce more work more quickly by fewer or the same number of people.

“We see a movement toward Revit and other BIM-based products, but we also see that the spec writing part of the business still relies on undesirable practices,” observes Gilles Letourneau, president, CEO and founder of InterSpec Inc. “Almost 40% of firms are still using dedicated spec writers and custom masters which help but they feel they could still take more advantage of technology.”

61% of those responding said that ensuring the use of ‘up-to-date’ building product data is the most significant challenge they face in writing specs in-house.  Almost half said that problems in spec writing tend to occur due to reusing old specs. Nearly half also called deadlines and the time consuming nature of the work major challenges.

Letourneau adds, “There is a lot of potential for meeting those challenges and reducing errors through automation products like e-SPECS, to ensure that firms will meet deadlines with accurate work and with cost savings.”
