Breaking Engineering Barriers

The engineering space is in constant transition. What has consistently pushed this booming industry forward are the great minds and innovative professionals stepping away from the norm and breaking through barriers. These engineers take their profession to new heights and drive advancements necessary to both the preservation and evolution of the engineering industry. To celebrate and acknowledge this trend, ESC Silicon Valley will welcome two Keynote speakers that have broken through these barriers and established themselves as both industry thought leaders and pioneers.

"The importance of thinking outside of the box and staying ahead of the curve – constantly innovating, constantly evolving – is crucial for the engineering space," said Nina Brown, Vice President of Events for the Advanced Manufacturing Portfolio, UBM. "Our Keynote speakers have done just that, securing themselves as innovators and leaders amongst their peers. We're thrilled to have them share their stories, knowledge and experiences with our dynamic audience."

Reaching for New Horizons
Keynote: Alice Bowman, New Horizons Mission Operations Manager, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory

Bowman is a member of the Principal Professional Staff at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, where she leads the Space Mission Operations Group and serves as Mission Operations Manager for NASA's New Horizons mission. She supervises approximately 40 staff members who operate deep-space and Earth-orbiting spacecraft and leads the team that commands and controls the spacecraft that made a historic close flyby of Pluto in 2015 and continued deeper into the solar system's distant Kuiper Belt region. In addition, Bowman has held positions with national defense space operations, systems engineering, program management, engineering management, space systems and space instrument development and deployment.

In her presentation, Reaching for New Horizons, Bowman will talk about the voyage of NASA's historic mission to Pluto – which culminated with the first flight past the distant dwarf planet on July 14, 2015. She'll speak about this journey through the eyes of the mission operations team and describe some challenges of piloting the small robotic spacecraft through the solar system for nearly a decade – such as planning for (and dealing with) long-distance technical hiccups. This team was part of history, operating a spacecraft that had to travel longer and farther than any previous mission in order to reach its destination.

The Keys to Innovation: Priming your Brain to Percolate Brilliant Ideas
Keynote: Ransom Stephens, physicist, engineer, author

Ransom is both well-known and highly regarded in the engineering space for his many contributions over the course of his career. As a pioneer in jitter analysis, he invented new methods for extracting signals from noise and has served on several high data rate standards. Ransom was also on the team that discovered the top quark and he discovered a new type of matter, the R(1525), a quark-anti-quark resonance including a "valence gluon." In addition to these various projects, Ransom is also dedicated to the advancement and education of engineering professionals. He has given thousands of speeches across the world, and has developed a reputation for making complex topics accessible and comical. His books span subjects about everything from signal integrity and quantum physics to parenting teens.

During his Keynote address, The Keys to Innovation: Priming your Brain to Percolate Brilliant Ideas, Stephens will examine the neural processes that percolate insights into consciousness: the physics of lateral thought, the power of perspective, the value of novelty, and how your brain selects and rejects ideas before you're even aware of them. Methods for fine-tuning the balance of stress and confidence, concentration and distraction that prime our brains to innovate our way to solutions of the challenges that we each face, as well as those that we face together, will also be discussed, as will the neuroaesthetics of what makes products and discoveries good, bad, and valuable.
