MELBOURNE, Australia — (BUSINESS WIRE) — October 9, 2016 — ITS World Congress – TomTom (TOM2) today announces a joint autonomous driving demonstration with Bosch. TomTom provided its HD Map and RoadDNA technology to setup a demonstration on the Australian F1 Grand Prix circuit at Albert Park; these novel products are important components to enable Bosch’s demo vehicle to perform in autonomous driving mode. TomTom HD Map and RoadDNA are two revolutionary, highly accurate digital map based products helping automated vehicles precisely locate themselves on the road and plan manoeuvres, even when traveling at high speeds.
“With the trend toward autonomous driving quickly becoming a reality, TomTom is excited to collaborate with Bosch to demonstrate the precision of our map products,” said Pieter Gillegot-Vergauwen, Vice President, Maps Product Management, TomTom. “We hope that Bosch’s demo vehicle, equipped with TomTom’s HD Map and RoadDNA, will lead to further acceleration of the development of autonomous vehicles and greater confidence in the safety, efficiency, and comfort these vehicles will deliver.”
Mid 2015, TomTom and Bosch announced that it would partner on innovative mapping technology for autonomous driving. Under this agreement, TomTom is designing the necessary maps, while Bosch, on the basis of its systems engineering work, is defining the specifications these maps have to meet.
Launched commercially in 2015, TomTom’s HD Map and RoadDNA coverage recently reached 206,203 kilometres globally, including:
- Motorways in France (32,956 km);
- Autobahn network in Germany (27,631 km);
- Interstates in 30 U.S. states (104,690 km);
- Interstates and highways in three U.S. states (40,926 km).
