Geosense to Supply Oblique Aerial Imagery to 4 of the 5 Biggest Metros in South Africa

Jul 20, 2016 -- Geosense Limited, Getmapping’s subsidiary company in South Africa, has recently secured contracts to provide oblique aerial imagery to 4 of the 5 biggest metros in South Africa.

The South African aerial survey specialist is supplying oblique aerial imagery to the City of Cape Town, the City of Johannesburg, Ethekwini Municipality and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

The project areas for Metros are typically large urban city environments which include hundreds of thousands of high resolution images per Metro, typically with an 8cm GSD.  However not all Geosense projects are of this size as oblique imagery can also be provided for areas of less than 10sq/km.

Geosense captures its oblique imagery using its state of the art 5 camera system technology. The Oblique camera system is equipped with the very efficient and robust Nikon D810 36 megapixel DSLR cameras. The imagery, which shows a 360° aerial view of the captured location, is then delivered seamlessly via a powerful web based software, or streamed into a 3rd party GIS system such as ArcGIS.

Local government valuations departments, city planners and property valuation professionals are realising the benefits of this invaluable resource. Both the data and the software tool are proving to be powerful assets as staff can quickly view locations and make an informed decision without having to undertake costly and time consuming site visits. In addition, field operatives with access to the web can view the imagery on their handheld smartphones or tablets.

“Oblique imagery gives a richer view of locations and is delivered in our powerful software that enables accurate 3D measurements to be taken, so users can measure spot heights, lengths, areas and perimeters and distances.” said Matt Murphy, Managing Director at Geosense. “Our oblique data also works seamlessly with leading GIS platforms. Customers have the peace of mind that data is delivered by an established data provider with fast and reliable online managed data services.”
