New Design Studio Groundbreaking to Be Celebrated at University of Miami School of Architecture
Oct 19, 2015 -- The groundbreaking ceremony of the Thomas P. Murphy Design Studio Building will take place at the University of Miami School of Architecture (SoA) at 4 p.m., on Wednesday, October 21. University of Miami President Julio Frenk, UM Chairman of the Board of Trustees Stuart Miller, Dean of the School of Architecture Rodolphe el-Khoury and Tom Murphy, Jr., President and CEO of Coastal Construction, will speak about the building and its transformative significance to the School of Architecture.
The state-of-the-art design studio, named for Thomas P. Murphy, Jr. after a $3.5 million gift from Coastal Construction, the major South Florida builder, will be LEED-certified and feature studios to accommodate more than 120 students. A student lounge, computer lab, presentation areas, review spaces and offices are additional features. A fabrication lab and modern workstations designed to enable advanced digital production will also be included.
The Thomas P. Murphy Design Studio Building will occupy about 20,000 square feet, including outdoor workspace and an outdoor jury area. It was designed by world-renowned Miami architecture firm Arquitectonica, by a design team led by School of Architecture adjunct faculty member Raymond Fort and Arquitectonica principal Bernardo Fort-Brescia, who moved to Miami in 1975 to teach at the School of Architecture.
