Directed by Yoruba Richen, THE NEW BLACK is a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community's institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing's strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda. On June 26, 2015, in a landmark ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.
"We currently find ourselves in a pivotal moment for civil rights," said Richen. "With a national dialogue on racial equality, racism and our system of criminal injustice, police brutality in the black community, the growing momentum of #BlackLivesMatter, the Supreme Court's dismantling of the Voting Rights act, efforts to pass anti-LGBT Religious Freedom Restoration Acts and other conservative and evangelical pushback against LGBT rights gains, THE NEW BLACK is incredibly timely. As a film that addresses the intersection of racial justice and LGBT civil rights, we are proud to be catalytic in launching so many conversations that are in line with a critical, necessary national dialogue currently underway."
