Vintage Quilt-Inspired Paintings To Benefit Sewing Workshops in Congo
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., July 17, 2015 — (PRNewswire) — The Laguna Gallery of Contemporary Art (LGOCA) will open a unique exhibition featuring local artist Heather Roth on August 6th, on view until October 1st. Curated by Art Director Christiana Lewis, Blocks of Time will feature a collection of paintings done on reclaimed wood, inspired by vintage quilt patterns. These paintings offer a contemporary riff on the time-honored tradition of quilting, and also contemplate the way in which small, quiet moments accumulate to form a day, a year, a lifetime.Heather Roth is a reclaimed wood artist based in Huntington Beach, California. Using hand-built reclaimed wood canvases and traditional hand-finishing techniques, Roth combines her love of woodworking, found vintage objects, and painting into a singular fine art style.
Art Raffle Benefit & Artisan Fair Trade Trunk Show
As a nod to the vintage quilts that inspired this collection, LGOCA and Heather Roth will be partnering with The Peace Exchange to support artisan fair trade Sewing Workshops in the Congo. The Peace Exchange works directly, in person, with the sewing workshops and 100% of seamstresses say their quality of life has improved as a result. 90% of the seamstresses are able to send their children to school and 50% return to continue their own educations. Supporting this cause can affect real change in a woman's life, and the lives of her family.
Stunning quilts, and other artisan goods hand sewn by women in the Congo, will be available for purchase at the reception. In addition, Roth and several other gallery artists will be painting live, and will raffle off their work at the show's closing on October 1st. Proceeds benefit The Peace Exchange.
