Danish design prize aims to change the world - 46 finalists announced

Jun 12, 2015 -- The race for the biggest design award in the world is officially on, as the 2015 INDEX: Award finalists are formally announced.

Today, June 12th, Danish non-profit organisation, INDEX: Design to Improve Life® announced 46 finalists for the world’s biggest design award, the acclaimed INDEX: Award. All 46 finalists share the ability to improve the world by design and were selected from a staggering 1,123 nominations from 72 countries.

The finalists represent a broad spectrum of talent, and hail from both emerging designers and big established companies. Among the finalists are thus “Foldscope” by Stanford engineers, Manu Prakash and Jim Cybulski, language and text translation platform “Duolingo”, the “Ambulance Drone” by Dutch designer Alec Momont, the “Google Self-Driving Car” and the much debated “Tesla Powerwall”.

All 46 finalists were chosen due to their strength and creativity in improving people’s lives, as well as their overall rank across the INDEX: Award criteria of Form, Impact, Context. They will compete in five different categories relating to world's biggest challenges like water shortage, climate change and universal education.

Overall, almost all continents were represented in the finalist pool, and among the leading nations are Kenya, The Netherlands, Denmark, and the UK.

On August 27th, five winners are chosen who will split the grand prize of €500,000. The Crown Prince Frederik and the Crown Princess Mary of Denmark will be present to see the winners receive their awards at an official ceremony in Elsinore, Denmark.
